SEATTLE (Dec. 31) – Suki Wiggs collected 21 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard Brian McGill made the game-winning layup with five seconds remaining Thursday to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 61-59 men’s basketball upset of nationally 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific.
The Seawolves (10-4, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 11 points from McGill and nine points apiece from juniors Corey Hammell and Diante Mitchell as they won at Royal Brougham Pavilion for the first time since 2004.
The Falcons (9-2, 2-1) were led by 16 points from center Gilles Dierickx, while guard Bryce Leavitt added eight points, nine rebounds and four assists.
In a longtime rivalry that UAA now leads 36-34, Thursday’s battle was another in a long line of hard-fought affairs. Neither team led by more than six points until the Falcons started the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 45-37 advantage. Later, Falcons guard Mitch Penner made shots on consecutive possessions to give his team a 52-43 edge with 8:23 remaining before the Seawolves made their comeback.
Christian Leckband and Spencer Svejcar nailed three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to start the surge, and Wiggs drew the Seawolves within 56-54 on a jumper at the 4:25 mark. Hammell tied it with two free throws with 3:13 left, and both teams went scoreless until Wiggs drew the fifth foul on Dierickx and split a pair of free throws with 1:17 showing.
After Leavitt responded with a free-throw split, Wiggs dished to Diante Mitchell, who drove aggressively for a layup – his first basket since the opening minutes – to make it 59-57 with 34 seconds left. UAA committed a foul on the inbounds, however, and SPU’s Will Parker coolly drained two charities for another tie.
UAA called timeout to set the final play, and McGill ran the clock down to 10 seconds with his dribble before making a strong drive to his left. In his first game since returning from academic ineligibility, the Preseason All-GNAC selection split a pair of SPU defenders and laid the ball gently off the back rim for the deciding field goal.
Leavitt brought the ball quickly downcourt and found Parker for the potential game-winner, but his three-point attempt sailed wide left.
Wiggs shot 9 of 22 from the field and collected his fourth double-double as the Seattle (O’Dea HS) native extended his UAA record with a 14th straight 20-plus scoring effort.
The Seawolves won despite being outrebounded 44-32 and shooting 4 of 19 from three-point range, offsetting those numbers by committing just six turnovers and outshooting the Falcons overall, 40 percent (23-57) to 33 percent (18-54).
Svejcar finished with eight points and Hammell added seven rebounds to help UAA run its win streak to four games and snap an 11-game skid at SPU.
With No. 3 Western Oregon losing as well Thursday, the Seawolves are now tied with Alaska Fairbanks (9-2, 3-0) atop the early GNAC standings. UAA will look to continue its hot play Saturday against Saint Martin’s (7-4, 1-2) at 6 p.m. AST in Lacey, Wash.
