MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior guard Suki Wiggs led a big second-half comeback Thursday but it was not enough as the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak end with a 76-66 setback against No. 8 Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (15-5, 8-1 GNAC) got 26 points from Wiggs and 17 points from senior guard Brian McGill to erase a 33-23 halftime deficit, only to see the hosts end the game with a 19-6 run.

The Wolves (15-2, 8-1) got a game-high 31 points from reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year Andy Avgi, plus nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists from guard Julian Nichols, to pull into a first-place tie with UAA in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

Western Oregon took control in the opening minute and extended its lead to 33-19 on Jordan Wiley’s three-pointer at the 2:11 mark of the first half before McGill scored four straight points to end the stanza.

The hosts still held a 47-35 advantage with 13 minutes left when the Seawolves made their charge, starting with five straight points from McGill. Diante Mitchell hit a three-pointer to make it 51-47 with 9:32 to play, and Wiggs made a trey for a 55-55 tie two minutes later.

Spencer Svejcar completed a traditional three-point play to give the Seawolves their first lead since the opening moments at 58-57, and Wiggs followed with another layup.

The momentum would not last, however, as WOU’s Devon Alexander drilled a corner three-pointer and Tanner Omlid scooped in a layup to retake the lead.

McGill’s layup rolled off the rim on the other end and Avgi drilled a straight-away three-pointer – his only trey of the game – to give the Wolves a 65-60 edge at the 3:30 mark. The Seawolves got the deficit down to three on two more occasions but never again had a chance to tie, with the Wolves clinching it a the free throw line.

Svejcar finished with 16 points as he combined with Wiggs and McGill for 83 percent of the Seawolves’ scoring.

Meanwhile, Wiggs scored 22 of his points in the second half and finished with nine rebounds to come one board shy of his sixth double-double. The Idaho transfer ran his school-record streak of 20-point efforts to 20 in a row, shooting 8 of 18 from the floor, 4 of 7 on threes and 6 of 6 at the foul stripe.

Junior forward Corey Hammell led the Seawolves with 10 rebounds as UAA suffered its first loss since Nov. 28 in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout against Div. I San Jose State.

UAA completes the first half of the GNAC schedule Saturday when they travel north on I-5 to face league newcomer Concordia (5-11, 3-6) at 6:30 p.m. AST in Portland.

Hammell scored a season-high 24 points and matched UAA’s best rebounding total of 2014-15 with 15 boards in the 69-65 win over Hawaii Pacific, converting a key three-point play with 15 seconds left ... in the GNAC openers against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, he averaged a crazily efficient 19.5 ppg, 14.5 rpg and 2.5 apg in 26 minutes per contest, shooting 12-15 FG, 2-2 3FG and 15-17 FT ... with 17 points and 17 rebounds against NNU, Hammell grabbed the most boards for a Seawolf since 2009 and matched UAA’s program-best in a GNAC game (Bullock, twice, 2002-03), while his 17 rebounds and 15 rebounds at Saint Martin’s marked his third ‘15/15’ outing.

B-MAC IN TOWN: Sr. G Brian McGill – the Seawolves’ leading returning scorer and assist man from 2014-15 – hasn’t taken long to make an impact since returning to the lineup on Dec. 31, averaging 14.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and a team-high 4.3 assists in six GNAC games ... in the GNAC-only stats, he ranks 12th in scoring, 13th in FG% (.509), 8th in assists and 2nd in FT% (.931)  ... the Oregon native has scored double figures in five of his six appearances and is connecting at .647 (22-34) from inside the arc, including the game-winning layup at Seattle Pacific with 5 seconds left ... after tallying 25 points at UAF – including a school-record 16-of-16 FT performance – McGill has now scored double figures in 24 of his last 34 outings dating to last year, including nine times with 20-plus ...  after just 64 games, the former Western Oregon transfer is already 4th on UAA’s career list with 352 assists, just six short of No. 3 (358, Bryan Anderson, 1991-94) and 19 shy of No. 2 (371, Jim Hajdukovich, 1995-99) ... on UAA’s other career lists, he is 3rd in assists per game (5.5), 16th in scoring average (14.7 ppg), 9th in FTs made (241), 12th in 3FG% (.419), 11th in FT% (.831) and 10th in FTs per game (3.8) ... a 2015-16 Preseason All-GNAC pick, McGill garnered All-GNAC Second Team honors in 2013-14 and was honorable mention last year.

TERRIFIC TRANSFERS: Junior college rivals for the past two seasons, Jr. G Diante Mitchell (Western Nebraska CC) and Jr. G/F Spencer Svejcar (Larmie County [Wyo.] CC) have been critical additions to UAA’s starting lineup this year, combining to average 24.3 ppg and 5.5 apg, with both shooting 85 percent from the foul stripe ... a former NJCAA Academic All-American, Mitchell ranks 2nd in the GNAC in 3FG% (.473), along with 5th in FT% (.846), 10th in assists (3.2), 8th in A/T ratio (1.7) and 13th in FG% (.516) ... Mitchell had perhaps his most solid week in UAA’s GNAC-opening wins over CWU and NNU, totaling 41 points (15-20 FG, 6-8 3FG, 5-6 FT) and 10 assists ... Svejcar was an NJCAA All-Region IX First Team selection as a sophomore after averaging 16.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 2.5 apg, while shooting .405 3FG last year ... the Colorado native has tallied double figures in 15 of 19 games as a Seawolf, including 22 points (7-13 FG, 4-6 3FG) at UAF, 18 points (8-9 FT) against Chaminade and 18 points (7-11 FG)/5 assists against Western Washington ... after starting the year 20 of 70 (.286) from 3FG range, he has nailed 20 of his last 34 (.588), including the game-tying trey at UAF on Saturday ... Svejcar has a solid 45/21 assist/turnover ratio in 581 minutes (30.6 mpg), and he holds GNAC overall ranks of 19th in scoring (13.2 ppg), 8th in 3FGs per game (2.1) and 17th in 3FG% (.385).

LECKBAND TOGETHER: Sr. F Christian Leckband is the most experienced Seawolf on the roster, with his 102 career games now 16th in program history ... coming off the bench in 18 of 19 contests this year, he has improved on his career scoring (10.8 ppg from 5.3 ppg) and rebounding (4.2 rpg from 3.2 rpg) averages, boosted by his 21 points against Simon Fraser and 16 points against MSUB ... last week he shot 10-18 FG to rise to 14th in the GNAC in FG% (.513), while he has also cracked the top 20 in 3FG% (19th, .384) and blocks per game (18th, 0.5) ... the Nome native has 10 double-figure scoring efforts this year, and he equaled the second-most rebounds of his career with 9 in the win over Hawaii Pacific.

BERG SIDELINED: UAA suffered a blow Nov. 6 when So. F Sjur Berg suffered a broken elbow in the Seawolves’ home opener ... following surgery, Berg is expected to miss at least two months and possibly the rest of the season ... the Norwegian ranked second on the team (15th GNAC) last year with 5.2 rpg and was averaging 7.0 rpg through the first three games this year.

THE OSBORNE FILE: Now in his 12th year as head coach, Rusty Osborne (223-123) has led the Seawolves to 10 straight winning seasons, along with five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals in his tenure at the helm … with UAA’s victory over Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 10, 2015, he became the first UAA basketball coach to reach 200 career victories … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne’s 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Osborne is assisted in 2015-16 by Cameron Turner (5th season) and Kasey Riley (1st season).

SEAWOLVES TABBED 4TH: The Seawolves were picked to finish fourth in the 2015-16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, released Oct. 15.

UAA's Svejcar earns GNAC Player of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. (Jan. 18) – Alaska Anchorage junior Spencer Svejcar has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men’s basketball after helping the Seawolves remain unbeaten in conference play with wins over longtime rivals Montana State Billings and Alaska Fairbanks last week.

The 6-4 guard from Arvada, Colo. (Ralston Valley HS/Laramie County CC) totaled 41 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while shooting .565 from the floor, .643 on three-pointers and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line in the two games. He also committed just one turnover in 75 total minutes, including none in UAA season-high 42 minutes at UAF.

On Tuesday, Svejcar had 19 points (6-10 FG, 5-8 3FG), three assists and five rebounds to help UAA to an 81-61 home victory over MSU Billings. In Saturday’s clash for first place at Alaska Fairbanks, he tallied a career-high 22 points (7-13 FG, 4-6 3FG, 4-4 FT) and grabbed four rebounds, hitting the game-tying three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation and the go-ahead trey in overtime of the 100-91 win.

Winners of nine straight, the Seawolves head south this week for a pair of games in Oregon, beginning with Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. AST showdown against nationally ranked and second-place Western Oregon in Monmouth. That game, along with Saturday’s game at Concordia (6:30 p.m. AST), can be seen live online at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.

FAIRBANKS (Jan. 16) – Suki Wiggs had 30 points and 11 rebounds and the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team got clutch performances from fellow guards Spencer Svejcar and Brian McGill to capture a 100-91 overtime victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center on Saturday night.

The Seawolves (15-4, 8-0 GNAC) got a season-high 25 points from McGill and a career-high 22 points from Svejcar – including the game-tying three-pointer with 2 seconds remaining – as they retained a one-game lead over Western Oregon and denied the UAF a share of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

The Nanooks (12-4, 6-2) were led by 21 points from guard Brandon Davis, plus 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from senior wing Travante Williams, whose late free throws nearly sealed the game in regulation.

After trailing 39-36 at halftime and 53-46 with 13 minutes left, the Seawolves finally hit their stride with an 8-0 run. Senior forward Christian Leckband scored twice during the surge, including a backdoor layup that made it 54-53, and McGill extended to a 62-55 edge with two free throws at the 7:08 mark.

The Nanooks would get hot from long range, however, with Davis’s three-pointer reclaiming the lead for the hosts at 63-62. After UAF’s Bangaly Kaba made it 72-68 with a layup at the 1:12 mark, Wiggs answered with a pair of free throws, then hit a long, closely guard three-pointer to slice the deficit to 74-73.

Williams sank two free throws with 12 seconds showing, but McGill found Svejcar for a straight-away three-pointer that he line-drived home despite a Nanook defender in his face.

After Kaba answered McGill’s free throws with a short jumper to start the overtime scoring, Svejcar drained another three-pointer, and McGill hit one from the corner for an 84-78 lead. The Seawolves pushed their advantage to 10 points twice in the extra session as the Nanooks never got closer than six points again.

UAA got 97 of its 100 points from only five players, as junior forward Corey Hammell chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds, and Leckband finished with nine points.

Svejcar – a transfer from Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College – shot 4 of 6 on threes to top his previous best of 20 points in a Seawolf uniform. Meanwhile, McGill reached the 25-point plateau for the first time this year and the eighth time in his three-year career. The Oregon native shot 16 of 16 from the free throw line to break one of the oldest records in program history – Kirk Abbeglen’s 14-of-14 performance from Dec. 12, 1981 (vs. NW Missouri State).

Wiggs shot 10 of 24 from the floor as the junior transfer became just the 11th player in UAA history to score at least 30 points on four or more occasions.  The former Idaho Vandal also extended his school-record streak to 19 straight games with 20 points or more.

The Seawolves complete the first half of the GNAC campaign with road games next week at nationally ranked Western Oregon (Thur., Jan. 21, 6:30 p.m. AST) and league newcomer Concordia-Portland (Sat., Jan. 23, 6:30 p.m. AST). The Seawolves lead WOU (14-2, 7-1) by one game atop the league standings.
