MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 23) – Guards Travis Thompson and Kyle Fossman led a record-setting three-point barrage by the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team Thursday night as the visitors blitzed Western Oregon for a 92-58 victory at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (11-8, 4-4 GNAC) got their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference road win thanks to a 19-of-39 performance from long range, while tying another program record with just four turnovers. Both marks set program-bests for road games as UAA head coach Rusty Osborne moved into a tie for the most victories in Seawolf men’s basketball history with 186.

Thompson, a 6-1 junior from Anchorage’s Dimond High School, poured in 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting (6 of 12 3FGs), along with three steals. Meanwhile, Fossman earned his first career double-double with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and 10 rebounds. The 6-footer from Haines also dished seven assists.

The Wolves (10-8, 3-5) were led by 12 points apiece from forward Lewis Thomas and guard Rodney Webster as they lost their fourth straight overall and suffered their worst defeat of the season by 22 points.

UAA – which led from start to finish – stretched its series win streaks to eight both overall and in Monmouth, where it has not lost since 2006.

The Seawolves led by as many as 15 in the first half held a 40-31 edge at the break when Fossman scored a put-back layin at the buzzer. Thompson came out with two quick three-pointers to start the second half and UAA would lead by double figures for the final 19:28.

UAA also got a double-double – his third straight – from junior swingman Teancum Stafford, who had 13 points (4-8 FG, 3-6 3FG) and 10 rebounds, while forwards Christian Leckband (3 of 3, 7 pts) and Brad Mears (3 of 4, 6 pts) helped UAA outshoot WOU 51.6 percent to 36 percent.

Sophomore point guard Brian McGill, from nearby Clackamas, finished with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, playing against his former team for the first time.

The Seawolves look to continue their momentum Saturday when they visit Saint Martin’s in Lacey, Wash., for another 6 p.m. AST tip.

NOTES: Osborne, who is now 186-101 in his 10th year at the helm, will surpass former mentor Charlie Bruns (1991-2004) with the Seawolves’ next victory … the 19 three-pointers broke UAA’s old road record of 18 (at Carver Bible College, 12/30/99) and the former road D-II best of 17 (at UAF, 2/26/94); it also marked the most treys for the Seawolves in a GNAC game, surpassing the mark of 17 set just 19 days ago against Simon Fraser … UAA’s 39 three-point attempts tied for fourth in single-game history, equaling the number from Jan. 16 vs. Northwest Nazarene … the four turnovers tied the fewest in a single game in program history for the fourth time – all in the Osborne era … UAA’s last 4-turnover effort came on Nov. 17 in a home win over Holy Names … Fossman surpassed his former career-high of nine rebounds, which he had set three times previously … Stafford’s double-double was his fifth this year and his sixth career … Thompson became just the 19th player in program history to have at least seven games with 25-plus points … now No. 22 on UAA’s career scoring list, he needs just 23 points to join Fossman in the Seawolves’ 1,000-point club … Fossman moved into 17th place on the career scoring list, now with 1,029, while rising to 16th in assists (216).

HOME SPLIT: The Seawolves earned a split of their high-scoring home series last week, coming back for a 92-83 win over Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 16 and suffering a 95-88 setback to Central Washington two nights later … against the Crusaders, Jr. G Travis Thompson scored his career-high against a fellow Div. II opponents, notching 34 points (8-21 FG, 4-11 3FG, 14-17 FT), along with 6 assists, 0 turnovers and 2 steals in 40 minutes … Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford was also big in the win with 13 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and 4 assists … So. PG Brian McGill added 17 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds to help UAA overcome a 16-point, first-half deficit … against CWU, Thompson and McGill combined for 42 points, but the Seawolves could not get the big defensive stops as the Wildcats shot 60 percent from the field … Stafford added his second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while reserve G/F Colton Lauwers chipped in 12 points (7-9 FT).

ANCHORAGE – Hot-shooting Central Washington defeated Alaska Anchorage 95-88 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game here Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. UAA slips to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in GNAC play while CWU improves to 8-7 and 4-3.

The Wildcats hit a sizzling 60 percent from the field and were led by a tandem of 6-6 seniors - JB Pillard (23 points) and Mark McLaughlin – the No. 2 scorer in the nation - with 22. Pillard also collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Seawolves, were led by Travis Thompson with 22 points and Brian McGill with 20. Teancum Stafford and Colton Lauwers added 12 points apiece. Stafford had a team-high 11 rebounds.

UAA, which trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, pulled to within one, 45-44, at halftime. And the Seawolves led briefly, 47-45, on a Thompson old fashioned three-point play just 22 seconds into the second half.

The Wildcats used their height advantage and shooting touch to quickly regain the lead, pushing it to nine (71-62) with 11:29 to go. UAA made numerous runs, including closing to within two (75-73) on a McGill three-pointer with 6:56 left and then to three (87-84) on a Thompson free throw with just 47 seconds remaining.

But the Seawolves were never able to get completely over the hump.

“We shot it better tonight, but our defense and rebounding let us down,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “We didn’t block out well and it killed us in the end.”

Central outrebounded UAA, 36-31. The victory was the third straight for the Wildcats in the series between the two teams, which UAA leads, 16-15.

The Seawolves hit the road next week to take on Western Oregon on Thursday (Jan. 23) and Saint Martin’s on Saturday (Jan. 25).
