ANCHORAGE (Feb. 11) – Brandon Walker scored a game-high 22 points and the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team ended with an 18-0 run Thursday to score a 68-53 upset over nationally 17^th-ranked Western Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (14-6, 5-4 GNAC) knocked off the defending league champions and the current top-rated squad in the NCAA Div. II West Region as they also got 13 points from junior forward Nick Pacitti and a career-high 10 points from sophomore forward Aaron Stevens. UAA entered with a regional rank of No. 8

The Vikings (21-4, 8-3) were led by 13 points from guard Derrick Webb, who did all of his damage in the first half. WWU held a 12-point advantage three times in the opening stanza – shooting 59 percent from the field and 6 of 10 on three-pointers – but could never blow the game open.

UAA’s defense then stepped up in the second half, holding the Vikings to 21 percent marksmanship, including 0 of 8 on treys.

Stevens, a 6-8 junior-college transfer who played locally at South Anchorage High, had the best game of his young career, making 5 of 6 shots and grabbing four rebounds. His steal and breakaway dunk with 12:33 remaining made it 47-40 and sparked the Seawolves’ late surge.

WWU forward Zach Bruce answered with a dunk of his own on the next play, but that would be the Vikings’ final field goal of the night as they missed their last 13 shots from the field.

Walker gave its first lead of the night on a spinning layup in the lane with 3:17 remaining, drawing the foul and converting the old-fashioned three-point play to make it 55-53.

After a pair of empty possessions on either side, Pacitti nailed a straightaway three with 2:03 left, and UAA sealed the game with eight straight free throws.

Walker shot 8 of 16 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line to post his seventh effort of 20 or more points this year.

The win earned the Seawolves a season split with the Vikings after falling 68-62 in Bellingham last month. It also evened the all-time series against WWU at 9-9 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

UAA returns to the WFSC on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to host another critical GNAC contest against regionally 9^th-ranked Central Washington.

UAA women, men hold steady in regional polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 10) – The Alaska Anchorage teams held their respective positions in the West Region on Wednesday as the NCAA released its latest Division II regional rankings for men’s and women’s basketball.

The Seawolf women (16-3 overall, 14-3 vs Div. II) are rated No. 4 in the West for the second straight week, while the men (13-6, 8-4) hold steady at No. 8. Both squads posted road victories over Alaska Fairbanks in their only games last week.

UAA’s women are No. 17 in this week’s national poll, but only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be three more regional polls until the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 7.

Both teams return to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex for critical games against Western Washington – rated No. 1 on the men’s side and No. 2 on the women’s – on Thursday evening. The doubleheader tips off at 5:15 p.m.

FAIRBANKS (Feb. 6) – Brandon Walker scored 20 points and the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team used its best defensive effort ever against rival Alaska Fairbanks to post a 56-42 victory at the Patty Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves (13-6, 4-4 GNAC) also got 11 points from junior guard Donnie Lao as they snapped a three-game losing streak and evened their Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark at the midway point of the schedule.

UAA – ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Div. II West Region – plays five of its final eight remaining regular-season contests at home.

The Nanooks (6-12, 1-8) were led by 13 points from junior forward Nashorn Maynard, but the hosts shot just 32 percent from the field and 12 percent on three-pointers. UAF’s previous low point total in 86 all-time games UAA against came in a 96-45 loss on Feb. 24, 2001.

Despite entering the game with seven straight wins over the Nanooks, however, the Seawolves fell behind 14-2 early Saturday before regaining their composure. Lao drained a three-pointer to even the game at 18-18, and Walker then led a UAA run that produced a 29-20 lead with 19 minutes remaining.

The Seawolves used a 40-31 rebounding advantage to keep the Nanooks at bay in the second half, keeping the game a double-digit affair for the final 14:26.

Walker, a 6-3 junior swingman, was easily the offensive star of the game, sinking 5 of 9 shots from the field and 9 of 10 at the free-throw line. He also tied with teammate Nick Pacitti and UAF’s Joe Powell for game-high rebounding honors with eight.

Lao shot 3 of 7 from long range and sank both of his free throws to improve his season average to .943 at the charity stripe. Pacitti added eight points and a block off the bench.

UAA returns to action Thursday when its hosts nationally ranked Western Washington in a crucial GNAC contest at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. AST.
