Seawolves triumph in season-opener

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Nov. 11) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team used balanced scoring and a school-record defensive effort in the first half Wednesday to claim a 64-39 victory over host American Sports University at the Hernandez Center.

The Seawolves were led by 13 points from sophomore center Malcolm Campbell and 11 from freshman Liam Gibcus in their UAA debuts, while junior forwards Nick Pacitti and Casey Robinson chipped in with eight points apiece.

Tiger Wright led the NAIA Eagles (0-1) with a game-high 15 points, but most of those came in the second half after UAA held ASU to just one field goal before halftime. UAA’s 35-7 advantage marked the fewest points allowed in any half by a Seawolf team, breaking the record of 11 against Lancaster Bible on Nov. 5, 2006.

Robinson – a 6-6 forward in his first game back after missing last season with a knee injury – hit a three-pointer to start the scoring, and UAA quickly jumped to leads of 12-0, 18-1 and 23-2.

A Julius Clark layup with 3:09 remaining in the half was ASU’s first basket of the night as the home team shot 1 of 18 in the opening stanza.

The Seawolves stay in southern California this week to take on Div. I Long Beach State in an exhibition at Walter Pyramid, Saturday, Nov. 14, at 3:05 p.m. AST.

Alaska preps Thompson, Fossman sign with Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 11) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team got a head start on its 2010-11 recruiting class Wednesday when it received National Letters of Intent from in-state standouts Kyle Fossman of Haines and Travis Thompson of Anchorage.

“We are extremely excited about the signing of both of these young men,” said Osborne, who begins his sixth season as UAA head coach tonight. “They represent the best of Alaska high school basketball and are the future of Seawolf basketball.”

Fossman was the Anchorage Daily News State 3A Player of the Year as a sophomore when he led Haines to its first-ever state title in 2008. In the state tourney that season, the 6-1, 190-pound guard averaged 27.3 points per game, including 39 in a first-round win over Grace Christian and 31 in the semifinals against Eielson.

Fossman averaged 30 points per game as a junior last year, earning all-region honors. This season he is a candidate for Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year honors.

Thompson, meanwhile, helped Dimond High to its first large-schools state title in 22 years as a junior last season, averaging 16 points per game during the regular season and earning honorable mention all-state honors from the ADN.

The 6-0, 175-pound guard averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in the Lynx’s title run, shooting 4 of 8 from three-point range.

“Travis and Kyle can play either backcourt position and have skills that complement each other,” Osborne added. “They are also both outstanding three-point shooters, which fits in perfectly with our system. Along with a legacy of state-championship success, they are also both incredibly hard workers who have a drive to compete. Rob Galosich at Dimond and Steve Fossman at Haines have coached them well to be prepared for the college game next year.”

Thompson and Fossman will join the Seawolves as true freshman for the 2010-11 campaign. Meanwhile, UAA’s 2009-10 season kicks off tonight in San Bernardino, Calif., when the Seawolves take on American Sports University (6 p.m. AST).
