SEATTLE (Feb. 28) – Alaska Anchorage sophomore Teancum Stafford scored a game-high 20 points Thursday but the Seawolves fell just short in their upset bid against No. 4 Seattle Pacific, falling 59-56 in men’s basketball action at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

UAA (17-8, 10-7 GNAC) took a top-5 nationally ranked opponent down to the final 10 seconds for the second straight game – following last Saturday’s 63-57 setback to No. 2 Western Washington – as sophomore Christian Leckband added nine points.

The Seawolves are No. 9 in the latest West Region rankings, while the Falcons hold down the No. 3 spot.

SPU (22-3, 15-2) was led by 13 points apiece from junior guard David Downs and senior forward Jobi Wall as it swept the regular-season series from UAA for the first time since 2006-07. The Seawolves have now lost nine straight against the Falcons at Brougham.

Playing without leading scorer Kyle Fossman (hand injury) for the second time in three games, Stafford staked the visitors to an early 24-12 lead. The 6-5 guard from nearby Auburn, Wash., shot 3 of 3 in the first half, including a pair of three-pointers, to help UAA build a 28-20 halftime advantage.

Liam Gibcus nailed a 17-foot jumper early in the second half to extend to a 33-22 lead, but the Falcons would claw back from there.

With Gibcus and Stafford in foul trouble, SPU earned the game’s only lead change when Wall beat the shot clock with a corner trey at the 6:41 mark, making it 43-41. Falcons forward Patrick Simon added another three a minute later, on what proved to be his team’s final field goal.

UAA quickly cut it to a 46-45 deficit on back-to-back shots from Stafford and Leckband, however the Falcons scored their final 13 points from the free-throw line to maintain the lead.

The Seawolves drew within 57-56 on Leckband’s rebound basket with 6.4 seconds left, and UAA had a chance to tie after two more SPU free throws, but Stafford could not get off a clean shot from the wing as time expired.

Stafford shot 7 of 13 from the floor, including 3 of 6 from long range, to reach the 20-point mark for the second straight game.

Freshman John Erickson provided six points on a pair of three-pointers to give the Seawolves an offensive lift, while Gibcus had six points and four rebounds before fouling out late. Senior forward Abebe Demissie dished a career-high five assists.

SPU’s victory keeps the Falcons mathematically alive for a share of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season title, although SPU needs to beat Alaska Fairbanks and hope No. 3 WWU loses at home to last-place Simon Fraser.

The Seawolves, despite Thursday’s loss, remain in the driver’s seat for the No. 3 seed at the upcoming GNAC Tournament. UAA enters Saturday’s 5 p.m. AST season finale at Montana State Billings in a 3rd-place tie with UAF, with the Seawolves owning the tiebreaker over the Nanooks.

UAA men 9th in latest D-II region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 27) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team fell one spot to No. 9 in this week’s Division II West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

With a 14-6 record against Division II competition, UAA is now just out of the final position to reach the NCAA West Regional Championships, which will take postseason tournament winners from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pacific West Conference, along with the next five highest-ranked teams.

The Seawolves were leapfrogged by San Francisco State (15-9) for the No. 8 ranking after the Gators swept their weekend series, including a buzzer-beating win over regionally 2nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. UAA split its two games, with its loss coming against region No. 1 and nationally 2nd-ranked Western Washington.

The Seawolves join WWU (22-1 vs D-II) and No. 3 Seattle Pacific (19-3) to represent in the GNAC in this week’s poll.

UAA has a chance to move up in the final week of the regular season as it visits SPU on Thursday (6 p.m. AST) and Montana State Billings on Saturday (5 p.m. AST).

The regional rankings will be released one more time – Mar. 6 – before the NCAA selection committee announces the playoff fields on Sunday, Mar. 10.

Five Seawolves make GNAC All-Academic hoops squads

 

PORTLAND, Ore. – Five Alaska Anchorage players were among the 53 student-athletes honored Wednesday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its All-Academic teams for men’s and women’s basketball.

The Seawolves accounted for three of the 23 men’s honorees, with senior Liam Gibcus capturing his third straight award. On the women’s side, senior Alysa Horn also became a three-time GNAC All-Academic pick.

Gibcus was one of four players on the men’s side to post a combined grade-point average of 3.8 or better. The Lysterfield, Australia, native recently became the second Seawolf men’s player in program history to earn CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America honors, thanks to his 3.80 GPA in civil engineering. The 6-10 center leads UAA with 6.8 rebounds per game, along with a 11.6 ppg scoring average.

Meanwhile, junior guard Kyle Fossman captured his second consecutive league all-academic nod. The Haines product owns a 3.50 GPA in accounting and is the Seawolves’ leading scorer on the court at 15.2 ppg. Senior center Chris Weitzel, from Gresham, Ore., also made the team thanks to a 3.23 GPA in business management.

Horn, a 6-foot forward, earned her third career GNAC All-Academic award with a 3.67 GPA in physical education. The Kodiak native is the Seawolves’ second-leading scorer (15.2 ppg) and ranks second in the GNAC with 9.2 rebounds per game. She was joined by junior teammate Kylie Burns, who was recognized for the second year in a row. Burns, from Kansas City, Kan., maintains a 3.45 GPA in dietetics, along with averages of 10.1 ppg and 7.3 rpg on the court.

 

To be eligible for the all-academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least his or her second year of competition at a GNAC university.

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 23) – Teancum Stafford scored a game-high 23 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback Saturday as 2nd-ranked Western Washington scored the final eight points to earn a 63-57 victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The regionally 8th-ranked Seawolves (17-7, 10-6 GNAC) saw their three-game winning streak despite 19 points and 10 rebounds from senior center Liam Gibcus in his final home appearance.

The defending national-champion and regionally top-ranked Vikings (25-1, 16-1) got 19 points – including the game-winning basket with 9 seconds remaining – from senior guard John Allen, plus 15 points from forward Paul Jones as they clinched at least a share of their second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

UAA trailed 32-25 at halftime and fell behind 41-28 on Jones’ jumper with 13:49 remaining. However Stafford answered with a three-pointer on the Seawolves’ next possession and Gibcus completed a traditional three-point play moments later to start a huge surge for the home team.

UAA finally pulled even for the first time since early in the first half when Stafford sank a short jumper to make it 50-50 at the 6:34 mark. After two more ties, the Seawolves took a 57-55 lead when Stafford double-clutched in the lane and banked it in with 1:21 to go.

WWU’s Cameron Severson drew a foul on the ensuing play and tied it with a pair of free throws, and UAA’s Colton Lauwers missed a three-pointer on the Seawolves’ next trip. Allen, who shot 7 of 14 from the floor, dribbled down the shot clock and calmly sank a short runner, leading to a Seawolf timeout with 5.8 on the clock.

The Vikings then drew a break when the Seawolves misfired on the inbounds pass, and Allen would sink the clinching free throws with 4.5 seconds showing.

The Seawolves’ loss was their sixth in a row against the Vikings and snapped a seven-game winning streak on their primary home court. UAA is now 29-3 at the WFSC in the last two and a half seasons, with two of those losses coming to WWU.

Gibcus and Stafford both shot 9 of 16 from the floor, while Stafford was 3 of 6 from long range and added four assists and five rebounds. Gibcus’ double-double was his second in as many games and fourth this season, helping the Seawolves win the rebounding battle 30-24.

Despite the loss, the Seawolves clinched at least a share of fourth place in the final GNAC standings, due to Montana State Billings’ earlier loss at Saint Martin’s on Saturday. UAA closes the regular season at nationally 5th-ranked Seattle Pacific (Feb. 28) and MSUB (Mar. 2). The Seawolves are currently tied for third in the 10-team league with Alaska Fairbanks, who plays the same opponents to close the year.

NOTES: Should UAA and UAF finish tied in the final league standings, the Seawolves would earn the higher seed for the Mar. 7-9 GNAC Tournament due to their head-to-head sweep of the Nanooks … Kyle Fossman nailed a late three-pointer to tie the game and extend his streak to 31 games in a row with at least one trey … Stafford extended his double-digit points streak to nine games, equaling his career-high 23 points from way back on Nov. 10 against Colorado State-Pueblo.
