UAA's Rohde, Walker picked to All-GNAC team

SPOKANE, Wash. (Feb. 25) – Junior Taylor Rohde was named first team and senior Brandon Walker was a second-team honoree Friday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its All-Conference team for men’s basketball, while junior guard Mario Gill was an honorable-mention selection.

 

Rohde, a 6-9 center from Phoenix (Pinnacle HS), has made an immediate impact in his first year after transferring from Arizona State, leading the Seawolves in scoring (16.8 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg), blocked shots (0.6 bpg) and field-goal percentage (.611). Rohde has scored double digits in 22 of the last 23 games and shot 50 percent or better in 20 of the last 23 contests, helping the Seawolves to a 21-8 record and a No. 7 West Region ranking.

In the GNAC stats, Rohde is the only player ranked 7th or higher in scoring (7th), rebounding (6th) and FG% (5th). Against No. 11 Central Washington on Dec. 30, Rhode became the first Seawolf since Nov. 2004 to post at least 25 points and 15 rebounds in a game when he went for 28 and 16 in the double-overtime win. Rohde earned all-tournament honors at all of UAA’s regular-season tourneys — the Disney Tip-Off Classic, the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout and the AT&T Jamboree, and he has earned two GNAC Player of the Week awards.

Walker, a first-team honoree as a junior in 2009-10, is UAA’s second-leading scorer at 14.2 points per game, along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. The 6-3 swingman from Hayward, Calif. (Bishop O’Dowd HS/Loyola Marymount) recently moved into UAA’s career top 10 in scoring with 1,158 points, becoming one of only seven Seawolf men to total at least 1,100 points and 400 rebounds.

On Saturday at Western Oregon, Walker became just the fourth Seawolf ever to score 40 points in a game when he hit that mark in UAA’s 88-83 victory. His 10 three-pointers against the Wolves also tied the GNAC record and broke UAA’s previous school record of nine.

 

Gill, a 6-2 guard, is averaging 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in his first season after transferring from Eastern Arizona College. The Portland, Ore. (Wilson HS) product paces the Seawolves in both three-point (.429) and free-throw (.831) percentages, scoring double digits on 17 occasions. Gill has raised his statistics considerably in conference games, averaging 11.2 points and 5.1 rebounds to help UAA to a runner-up finish with a 13-5 GNAC record.

 

The Seawolves open the inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament when they host Saint Martin’s on Monday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Nine Seawolves lead GNAC All-Academic hoops squads

 

SPOKANE, Wash. – Nine Alaska Anchorage players – five women, four men – were among the 50 student-athletes honored Thursday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its All-Academic teams for men’s and women’s basketball.

UAA’s nine total honorees tied with Saint Martin’s for the most in the 10-team league.

On the women’s side, UAA’s five honorees set a program record for the most named to any all-league academic squad in 27 years of conference affiliations. Senior Kaitlin McBride paced the Seawolves with her 3.73 grade-point average in sociology, while fellow seniors Nikki Aden (3.60, journalism & public communications) and Sarah Herrin (3.47, justice) were among seven women who made the team for the third time in their careers.

 

Junior Hanna Johansson (3.62, journalism & public communications) earned her second career all-academic award, while sophomore Alysa Horn (3.55, physical education) earned the award in her first year of eligibility. Johansson, who leads the 19^th-ranked Seawolves in scoring and rebounding, was also recently voted to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 8 Team, recognizing her as one of the top players and students among all non-Division I programs in the West Region.

 

On the men’s side, UAA led the league with its four selections, paced by sophomore Liam Gibcus’s 3.83 GPA in civil engineering. Gibcus had the highest GPA among American schools, while Simon Fraser’s Zachary Frehlick posted a 4.15 GPA in the Canadian system, which awards 4.33 points for an A+.

UAA’s other men’s honorees were junior guard/forward Phillip Hearn (3.39, civil engineering), junior point guard Steve White (3.31, physical education) and senior point guard Drew Robinson (3.28, history).

 

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least his or her second year of competition at a GNAC university.

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 23) – Casey Robinson scored 21 points and fellow senior Brandon Walker added 20 on Wednesday night to lift the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a 118-82 blowout of Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

 

Senior point guard Drew Robinson added eight assists as the Seawolves (21-8, 13-5 GNAC) clinched second place in the final Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings in front of a regional television audience on Fox Sports Northwest.

UAF (8-17, 5-13) were led by 27 points and four assists from reserve guard Jarrett Miller, but the Nanooks saw their season come to an end with a fifth straight loss.

UAA – ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Div. II West Region – will now enter the inaugural GNAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and host the No. 7 seed (either Saint Martin’s or Western Oregon) in a 7:30 p.m. tip Monday, Feb. 28 at the WFSC.

After defeating the Nanooks 74-65 on Tuesday in Fairbanks, the Seawolves quickly took control of Wednesday’s rematch, blazing to a 25-10 lead in the opening six minutes. UAF sliced its deficit to 49-43 with 2:35 on the first-half clock, but the Seawolves responded with a 26-2 run that spanned the intermission. The Nanooks missed their first nine shots of the second half before Mason King’s jumper made it 75-47 at the 15:04 mark.

Casey Robinson scored all of his points from long range, hitting 7 of 10 three-pointers, and added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Walker, also playing his last regular-season home game, shot 8 of 11 overall, 3 of 5 on treys, and dished five assists.

UAA put five players in double figures, with juniors Taylor Rohde and Mario Gill accounting for 18 points apiece, and freshman Travis Thompson adding 10 points off the bench. Rohde led UAA with eight rebounds in just 18 minutes of action.

UAA’s 118 points equaled its most since a Nov. 2005 win over NAIA Northland Baptist, and was its most ever in a GNAC game. It also matched the fourth-highest total for a Seawolf team against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent.

Eleven of UAA’s 12 players found the scoring column as the Seawolves outshot the visitors 58.5 percent to 39.7 percent and outrebounded them 43-32. The Seawolves canned 13 of 24 three-pointers (.542), while UAF was just 9 of 28 (.321) from downtown.

Junior center Matt Peterson came off the bench to score seven points, grab a career-high six rebounds, and swat two of UAA’s season-high six blocked shots.

UAA women 6th, men 7th in regional poll

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 23) – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team fell to No. 6 while the Seawolf men remained No. 7 in the latest Division II regional rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

Today’s rankings take into account only games played through Sunday, so last night’s UAA men’s victory at Alaska Fairbanks is not reflected in the current poll.

 

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds four of the top 10 places in the men’s rankings with No. 1 Central Washington, No. 7 UAA, No. 8 Seattle Pacific and No. 10 Western Washington. The Seawolves (20-8 overall, 14-7 vs. D-II) remained seventh after splitting road games at Saint Martin’s (60-54 loss) and Western Oregon (88-83 win) last week.

 

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds three of the top eight places, with Western Washington ascending to No. 1, UAA (22-6, 21-5) at No. 6, and Seattle Pacific at No. 8. UAA fell two spots this week after splitting road games at WWU (67-57 loss) and Simon Fraser (55-36 win). Grand Canyon (No. 3) and Dixie State (No. 5) leapfrogged the Seawolves despite having both lost to UAA earlier in the season, while previously top-ranked Cal Poly Pomona fell to No. 4.

 

Only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be one more regional poll before the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 6.

 

The winners of the GNAC and California Collegiate Athletic Conference tournaments, along with the regular-season Pacific West Conference champions, will receive automatic bids to the NCAA West Regional tournaments, which begin Mar. 11.

 

Both Seawolf teams are at home to close the regular season this week, with the men facing Alaska Fairbanks tonight (Fox Sports Northwest, 6:30 p.m. AST) and the nationally 19th-ranked women hosting UAF on Thursday (7 p.m.). Both UAA teams have clinched first-round home games for the inaugural GNAC Tournament, which begins Feb. 28.
