LACEY, Wash. (Mar. 7) – Six Alaska Anchorage players scored in double figures but Central Washington used a huge second-half comeback and got a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Mark McLaughlin to knock off Alaska Anchorage 79-78 on Thursday in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at Marcus Pavilion.

Regionally 8th-ranked and UAA (18-9) – seeded third in the tournament – was led by 18 points from senior center Liam Gibcus, while junior guard Kyle Fossman had 11 points, seven assists and no turnovers in 38 minutes.

But McLaughlin took over in the second half for Central (15-12), scoring 26 of his 32 points after the break to rally his team from a 44-26 halftime deficit.

UAA trailed only once in the first half, at 10-9, before going on an 11-2 run to take control. After a quick Central rally to start the second half, the Seawolves seemed to reassert themselves and pushed their lead back to 68-52 on a Gibcus layup with 8:37 remaining.

That would be UAA’s last field goal for nearly seven minutes, however, and McLaughlin began scoring on seemingly every trip down the court. A three-pointer by McLaughlin finally tied it 73-73 at the 2-minute mark, and both teams went scoreless on their ensuing possessions.

Gibcus scored on a pick-and-roll feed from Fossman with 46 seconds to go, and freshman point guard Jalen Little made one of two free throws after grabbing a defensive rebound, putting UAA ahead 76-73.

Central’s Kevin Davis drove through the lane and bounced a jumper off the rim and in on Central’s next possession, drawing a foul in the process. The Wildcat center made his free throw to knot it with 12 seconds remaining, but his team did not stop Little on his drive down the court, and the rookie laid it in with 3.7 seconds showing.

After Fossman knocked a long inbounds pass out of bounds, the Wildcats called timeout and set up a play with 2.5 seconds on the clock. Davis inbounded along the sideline to McLaughlin, who took a dribble and swished his third and final trey at the buzzer, giving his team its only lead of the second half.

Sophomore guard Teancum Stafford, junior guard Colton Lauwers and senior forward Abebe Demissie joined Fossman with 11 points, while Little collected 10 points and four assists in the loss, which may end hopes for UAA’s third straight NCAA Tournament berth.

Central, the No. 6 seed, moves on to Friday’s early semifinal where it will meet No. 2 seed and nationally 3rd-ranked Seattle Pacific.

Seawolf men move up to 8th in West Region

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 6) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team rose one spot to No. 8 in this week’s Division II West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

With a 15-7 record against Division II competition, UAA is now in the final position to reach the NCAA West Regional Championships, which will take postseason tournament winners from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pacific West Conference, along with the next five highest-ranked teams.

The Seawolves split on the road last week at Seattle Pacific and MSU Billings in order to leapfrog San Francisco State (15-11), which lost two games last week to fall to 10th. Meanwhile, Chico State (15-9) moved up from 10th to ninth, and Chaminade (16-5) remained seventh.

UAA joins No. 1 Western Washington (23-1 vs D-II) and No. 3 Seattle Pacific (21-3) to represent in the GNAC in this week’s poll.

The Seawolves have a chance to improve their NCAA chances when they take the court for the GNAC Tournament this week in Lacey, Wash. Third-seeded UAA begins with a quarterfinal matchup against 6th-seeded Central Washington on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. AST.

This marks the final version of the regional rankings, leading to the NCAA field announcement on Sunday, Mar. 10 (6:30 p.m. ADT at ncaa.com).

Fossman, Stafford lead UAA All-GNAC honors

PORTLAND, Ore. (Mar. 4) – Alaska Anchorage junior Kyle Fossman was selected to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team on Monday as the league handed out its men’s basketball postseason awards.

The 6-foot guard was joined by teammates Teancum Stafford, who made the All-GNAC Second Team, and Liam Gibcus, who earned honorable mention in voting by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Fossman leads the Seawolves and ranks seventh in the league with 14.9 points per game, along with 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. The Haines native ranks second in the GNAC with 2.6 three-pointers and 36.1 minutes per game, plus marks of fourth in free-throw percentage (.862) and eight in three-point percentage (.441).

Helping UAA to an 18-8 record and third place in the GNAC with an 11-7 mark, Fossman has scored double figures in 20 of his 24 appearances, including six games with at least 20 points. He nailed multiple three-pointers in the first 14 games this year and ran his streak to 31 straight games with at least one trey before having it snapped in the regular-season finale.

Stafford, a 6-5 sophomore guard, ranks ninth in the league with 14.4 points per game, while his 4.4 rebounds are second on the team. The Auburn, Wash., product and Snow (Utah) College transfer has scored double figures in 21 of his 25 games, including a current string of 11 in a row. In November, Stafford joined Fossman on the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament team as the pair helped UAA beat a pair of Div. I opponents, and he was the MVP of the season-opening AT&T Jamboree.

 

Gibcus, a 6-10 senior center, earned honorable mention status thanks to his 11.3 points and team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. The Lysterfield, Autralia, native ranks ninth in the league in rebounding and fifth in field-goal percentage at .571. After entering the season with only one career double-double, he has registered five this year, including three in the last four regular-season games. The program’s second-winningest player with 79 career victories, he recently made history by becoming the second Seawolf to earn CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America honors (3rd Team).

 

The regionally 9th-ranked Seawolves return to action Thursday with a quarterfinal game against Central Washington in the 3rd annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament in Lacey, Wash.

BILLINGS, Mont. (Mar. 2) – Sophomore Teancum Stafford scored 16 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with 6.7 seconds remaining, to lift the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a school-record comeback in Saturday’s 71-69 win over Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (18-8, 11-7 GNAC), ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, also got a career-high 16 points from freshman forward Christian Leckband as they erased a 22-point first-half deficit. The win gives UAA a sweep of the regular-season series and clinches the No. 3 seed for next week’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament.

Senior Liam Gibcus helped UAA to a 32-22 edge on the boards with 10 points and 11 rebounds, giving the 6-10 center his third double-double in the last three games. The Seawolves’ comeback was their largest ever from a halftime deficit on the road, surpassing a 13-point rally at Chaminade on Dec. 15, 2003.

The Yellowjackets (16-13, 9-9) were led by 21 points from guard David Arnold, who powered his team to a 37-15 advantage with 6:30 left in the first half. MSUB made 9 of its fist 15 three-point attempts and led 44-27 going into the break.

UAA responded with a 15-2 run to start the second half, though, and pulled within 55-53 on two free throws by Kyle Fossman at the 8:19 mark. The Yellowjackets seemed to retake the momentum with a 9-1 run of their own, making it 64-54 with 5:32 left, but the Seawolves would not go away.

Leckband hit a three-pointer and added a pair of free throws a couple minutes later to slice it to 66-52 with 2:42 remaining, and Stafford would do the rest.

Stafford converted two more charities and a layup, then drew a shooting foul on MSUB forward Robby Trabing with 1 minute remaining. The 6-5 guard from Auburn, Wash., coolly converted both shots again to give UAA its first lead since the opening seconds at 68-67.

MSUB’s Jarrell Crayton rattled in a short baseline jumper to put the hosts ahead again, setting up UAA’s final chance with 31 seconds remaining. As the clock wound down, Seawolf point guard Colton Lauwers fired a perimeter pass to Stafford, who hesitated before swishing a spot-up three from wing.

UAA appeared to have the game clinched when Jalen Little deflected a steal to Abebe Demissie, but Demissie was called for traveling with one second on the clock. Seawolf coach Rusty Osborne put 6-9 Collin Spickerman on the floor to guard the final inbounds pass, which went off Arnold’s hands as time expired.

Fossman finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Demissie had seven of his eight points in the first half to keep UAA within shouting distance.

“Our guys proved tonight that they are high-character individuals,” said Osborne. “You can’t make a comeback like that without a strong will and the right attitude. I thought everyone played his role in the second half and our defense started keying our offense. Hopefully we can carry this momentum with us to the GNAC Tourney.”

After a quick trip home, the Seawolves will travel again next week to Lacey, Wash., where they will face No. 6 seed Central Washington in the GNAC Tournament quarterfinals on Thur., Mar. 7 at 4:15 p.m. AST.

NOTES: Fossman, who played with a wrap on his injured right hand, had his string of 31 straight games with a three-pointer snapped, leaving the 6-foot junior from Haines with the third-longest streak in program history … UAA’s halftime comeback matched the third-largest in program history and the largest ever in a GNAC game; the Seawolves rallied from a 51-34 hole for a Jan. 2004 home win over Northwest Nazarene ... UAA has been runner-up in the first to GNAC Tournaments.
