MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 19) – Sophomore guard Travis Thompson scored a career-high 22 points and Marcus Jackson added 13 points Thursday to lead the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a 66-55 road victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

 

With the Great Northwest Athletic Conference leading scorer Taylor Rohde plagued all night by foul trouble, the Seawolves (12-4, 6-2 GNAC) also got eight assists from senior point guard Steve White as  claimed a key victory against fellow league contender.

 

Western Oregon (13-4, 6-2) was led by 12 points and four rebounds from senior guard Kyle Long, but the Wolves suffered their second straight home loss after a 13-2 start to their campaign.

 

After WOU scored the game’s first basket, Thompson knocked down the first of his six three-pointers to stake UAA to a lead it would never relinquish. The 2010 Alaska 4A Player of the Year finished the first half with 17 points, making all five of his three-pointers and his only two-point attempt, to help the Seawolves claim a 37-22 lead at the break.

 

Rohde, a 6-9 center who averages 21.1 points per game, picked up his third and fourth fouls less than one minute into the second half, but UAA got a big lift off the bench from reserve center Liam Gibcus and continued to control the tempo.

 

WOU pulled within 41-33 with 15 minutes to play when Gibcus answered with a midrange jumper and Kyle Fossman (9 points, 5 rebounds) knocked down a three-pointer, and the Seawolves’ lead swung between 11 and 17 for the rest of the night.

 

Gibcus, a 6-10 junior from Lysterfield, Australia, finished with five points, four rebounds and two assists, while his three blocked shots were both a career- and UAA season-high.

 

Thompson, meanwhile, topped his previous career-high by two points, finishing 7 of 9 from the field and 6 of 7 from long range. The Dimond High product also snagged a career-high six rebounds to help the Seawolves out-board the Wolves 33-27.

 

UAA plays the second of its four straight road games this Saturday when its travels north to Lacey, Wash., to face Saint Martin’s in a 6 p.m. AST tip.

UAA men start road swing at WOU, SMU

The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team (11-4, 5-2 GNAC) begins a 4-game road swing this week when it travels to face GNAC co-leader Western Oregon on Thursday, Jan. 19, followed by a date at Saint Martin’s on Saturday, Jan. 21. ANCHORAGE (Jan. 14) – Alaska Anchorage’s Taylor Rohde scored a game-high 26 points but visiting Western Washington made the keys plays late Saturday, earning a 73-68 victory over the Seawolves in a battle of Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contenders.

The Seawolves (11-4, 5-2 GNAC) also got 11 points from sophomore guard Travis Thompson as they saw their 13-game Wells Fargo Sports Complex win streak come to an end.

The Vikings (15-3, 6-1) got 18 points from senior forward Rory Blanche – including the go-ahead three-point play with 1:38 remaining – as they moved into a first-place tie atop the GNAC standings.

Guard John Allen added 17 points and five assists for WWU, while guard Richard Woodworth had 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four blocks, helping the Vikings win for the third time in their last four trips to Anchorage.

The Seawolves, who erased a late double-digit deficit in Thursday’s 86-81 win over Simon Fraser, almost did it again Saturday, coming back from a 53-42 hole with 10:52 left.

Thompson pulled UAA even at 59-59 with a three-pointer at the 5:18 mark and the hosts took their first lead since halftime when Rohde swished two free throws with 1:49 remaining, making it 66-65.

The Vikings would answer quickly, however, as Zack Henefin drove the baseline and fed Blanche, who drew the foul from Rohde and completed the layup.  After UAA’s Kyle Fossman missed a corner three-pointer, Allen sealed his team’s win with a bank-in trey with 20 seconds left, making it 71-66.

The Vikings shot 65 percent (17 of 26) in the second half and nailed 47 percent (9 of 19) from three-point range for the game.

Thompson made 3 of 6 three-pointers for UAA, which shot 7 of 20 from distance, but the Seawolves could not take advantage on a night when they committed just nine turnovers.

The Seawolves now hit the road for four straight games, beginning Thur., Jan. 19, when the travel to Monmouth, Ore., to face GNAC co-leader Western Oregon. That game tips at 6 p.m. AST and can be heard live on FM-93.7 KAFC in Anchorage.
