UAA signs sharp-shooting JC transfer Dom Hunter

ANCHORAGE (May 1) – The Alaska Anchorage basketball team has welcomed another sharp-shooting guard to its 2014-15 roster as head coach Rusty Osborne announced Thursday that junior college standout Dom Hunter has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

In two seasons at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Ariz., the 6-foot, 180-pounder helped his team to nearly 40 victories, two postseason berths and recognition in the NJCAA national poll. As a sophomore last season, Hunter earned Second Team All-Region I and Arizona Community Colleges Athletic Conference honorable mention honors, averaging 18 points and nearly three three-pointers per game. He tallied 20-plus points on 11 occasions in 2013-14 – including 35 points on 10-on-13 three-point shooting in a win over Cochise College – shooting 42 percent overall, 41 percent on threes and 82 percent at the free-throw line.

“Dom’s ability to shoot, plus his toughness, fit perfectly into our system,” said Osborne, who has led the Seawolves to nine straight winning seasons. “He had outstanding shooting percentages that were even better before suffering a foot injury that affected him the final two weeks. His strength and ball-handling allow him to play both backcourt positions, which will help to offset the loss of Kyle Fossman and Colton Lauwers to graduation.”

Before heading south, Hunter was a prep standout in his hometown of Tacoma, Wash., where he earned First Team All-Puget Sound League 3A and Tacoma All-City honors. As a senior in 2011-12, he averaged 21 points per game and led Decatur High School to its sixth straight WSAA State Tournament berth.

“We are grateful for the confidence that (EAC) Coach (Maurice) Leitzke and Dom’s parents have shown in our program,” Osborne added. “Dom is fortunate to have a caring coach and parents who have helped him become a high-character person as well as a fine basketball player.”

Hunter becomes the third member of UAA’s 2014 recruiting class, joining a pair of incoming freshmen – Damien Fulp (G, 6-1/160, Palmer/Colony HS) and Brian Pearson (F, 6-9/225, Elko, Nev.) – who signed their letters of intent last fall.
