Former Seawolf Cooper joins top Aussie pro league

SYDNEY, Australia (May 6) – Two years after piloting the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to the NCAA Division II semfinals, former Seawolf All-American Luke Cooper has reached the sport’s top professional level in his home nation.

Cooper, a 6-0 point guard, this week signed with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League for the 2010-11 season, the club announced at a press conference Wednesday.

“Since leaving UAA, Luke has continued to work hard and pay his dues as he has moved up the pro ranks,” said Seawolf head coach Rusty Osborne. “We are extremely proud to see him advance to the NBL as we know this is a dream come true for him and his family.”

After accumulating the fourth-most career assists (810) in NCAA D-II history from 2004-08, Cooper began his pro career in 2008-09 with Riga VEF of the Baltic League, where he averaged more than four assists per contest.

Currently, the Melbourne native is playing for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles of the Australian Basketball Association.
