BILLINGS, Mont. (Mar. 5) – Senior guard Derrick Fain scored 17 points Thursday but it was not enough as the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team fell 76-56 to a hot-shooting Western Washington squad in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves finish with a 16-13 record – the program’s 10th straight winning season – and tied for third in the final GNAC standings at 12-6.

Fourth-seeded UAA, which swept the Vikings by a combined seven points during the regular season, never led Thursday. The Seawolves had two chances to tie or take the lead midway through the first half, but the Vikings used a 12-2 run to end the period and take a 30-19 lead.

Senior center Brad Mears scored all six of his points early in the second half to keep UAA close at 43-37, before WWU – the tourney’s No. 5 seed – answered with a 15-2 spurt to pull away.

Reserve guard Joey Schreiber scored 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting and fellow sub Kyle Impero had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the Vikings (19-10, 11-7 GNAC) to their ninth straight victory. WWU shot 52.2 percent, while the Seawolves connected at just 35.5 percent.

“We did a good job on their primary shooters but they just got great play off the bench,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “I’m really proud of our seniors, however. They made big contributions to our program, and we’ll miss them.”

Travis Thompson, a First Team All-GNAC guard from Anchorage’s Dimond High School, finished with five points and six assists in his final college game. The former Dimond High star completed a three-point play early in the second half to move into No. 2 on UAA’s all-time scoring list, finishing his career No. 2 at UAA and No. 12 in the GNAC with 1,667 points.

Freshman center Kalidou Diouf and junior guard Dom Hunter scored 10 points apiece for the Seawolves, while Thompson grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

WWU moves on to play top-seeded Western Oregon in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. MST semifinal game.

UAA men's hoops chosen GNAC Red Lion Hotels Team of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. (Mar. 2) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team won two games last week – including one over conference champ Western Oregon –  to earn the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Red Lion Hotels Team of the Week honor.

The Seawolves (16-12, 12-6 GNAC) earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament with their victories over WOU and Saint Martin’s. The wins also helped extend UAA’s streak of top-four GNAC finishes to five in a row.

First Team All-GNAC guard Travis Thompson scored a team-high 33 points, including 22 against SMU, while starting guard Derrick Fain added 32 on the week.

In Thursday's matchup, Alaska Anchorage outscored the 20th-ranked Wolves in the first-half and rode that momentum to a thrilling 80-78 victory. Junior forward Christian Leckband sparked UAA’s winning rally and finished with a team-high 16 points on 4-of-4 three-point shooting.

“I’m very proud of this group tonight,” head coach Rusty Osborne said after the game. “We came and executed the game plan. As we got into the flow of the game I thought we loosened up a little bit and started having success offensively.”

UAA climbed back from an eight-point deficit early in the game to take a lead into the half.

The Seawolves and the Wolves were trading baskets throughout the second half and WOU eventually tied the game at 69 with less than five minutes in regulation.

Kalidou Diouf added two crucial points on an assist from GNAC honorable-mention guard Brian McGill, and the Seawolves never relinquished the lead, beating the Wolves at home for the fifth straight time.

UAA had four players score in double-figures, including Dom Hunter’s 14 off the bench.

In Saturday’s contest against Saint Martin’s, the seniors took control in their last game at the Alaska Airlines Center as Thompson, Fain, Boomer Blossom and Brad Mears combined for 48 points on 11-of-19 three-point shooting in the 101-67 win.

“I thought we had a pretty complete effort,” Osborne said. “We didn’t make a lot of shots early, which tends to happen on senior night. I thought we were patient and defended really well.”

The Seawolves scored eight straight points two different times in the first half to take a 14-point lead at the break.

Mears converted on an old-fashion three-point play early in the second half and Hunter and Thompson hit all three free throws after being fouled on back-to-back plays. By the end of the half, 42 of the team’s 56 second-half points came from either the free throw or the three-point line.

This marks the first GNAC Team of the Week honor for the Seawolves in the 2-year history of the award.

UAA plays Western Washington in Thursday’s GNAC semifinals in Billings, Mont. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. AST.

UAA's Thompson picked 1st Team All-GNAC, McGill hon. mention

PORTLAND, Ore. (Mar. 2) – Alaska Anchorage senior Travis Thompson has been voted to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team for the second year in a row as the league announced its men’s basketball postseason honors Monday.

Thompson was joined among the award winners by backcourt mate Brian McGill, who picked up honorable mention accolades.

A 6-1 guard, Thompson is the GNAC’s fourth-leading scorer with 17.2 points per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the three-point line and 82.5 percent at the free-throw stripe. The local Dimond High School product is also dishing 3.3 assists per game as he ranks among the NCAA Div. II top 25 stats leaders in three-point percentage, three-pointers per game (3.2) and assist/turnover ratio (2.8).

Thompson has scored more than 20 points on 11 occasions this year, moving up to No. 3 on UAA’s all-time scoring list and No. 12 on the GNAC list with 1,662 for his career. Also the school and GNAC career three-point king, he became the first player in league history to surpass 300 three-pointers (302) with six treys in Saturday’s regular-season finale victory over Saint Martin’s.

An All-GNAC Second Team selection as a sophomore in 2011-12 before redshirting the following year, Thompson was the only repeat first-team pick from the 2013-14 campaign.

McGill – who earned All-GNAC Second Team honors as a sophomore last year – made honorable mention this time around. The 6-2 point guard from Clackamas, Ore., ranks third in the GNAC and 26th nationally with 5.4 assists per game, while ranking 12th in the league with 14.2 points per game. After just two seasons in a Seawolf uniform, McGill ranks in UAA’s career top 10 in total assists (7th, 322), assists per game (3rd, 5.6) and three-point percentage (6th, .448).

The All-GNAC teams and special awards are voted upon by the league’s 10 head coaches. Western Oregon’s Andy Avgi was voted GNAC Player of the Year, while WOU’s Brady Bergeson was chosen Coach of the Year.

The Seawolves are one of six GNAC teams remaining alive for the upcoming league tournament, which comes with an automatic NCAA Tournament berth for the winner. Fourth-seed UAA (16-12, 12-6 GNAC) will play 5th-seeded Western Washington (18-10, 11-7) at 5:30 p.m. Alaska time in Thursday’s quarterfinal round in Billings, Mont.

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 28) – Senior guards Travis Thompson and Derrick Fain combined for 41 points and 13 assists in their final home game to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 101-67 men’s basketball blowout of Saint Martin’s at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves (16-12, 12-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 19 points and nine assists from junior point guard Brian McGill as they clinched no worse than a tie for third place in the final league standings. UAA must wait for results from a pair of other league games later tonight to learn their seeding for the GNAC Tournament, which starts Thursday in Billings, Mont.

The Saints (6-22, 3-15) were led by 16 points, three assists and three steals from senior guard Riley Carel as the visitors from Lacey, Wash., ended the year on a seven-game losing skid.

UAA trailed 11-7 early and did not take the lead for good until Fain’s three-pointer made it 23-21 at the 9:03 mark, sparking a 10-0 Seawolf run.

The Seawolves led 45-31 at halftime and extended throughout the second stanza, with Thompson accounting for 16 of his 22 points after the break. The senior from Dimond High School pushed his UAA- and GNAC-record total to 302 three-pointers, shooting 6 of 13 from long range. Now with 1,662 points, Thompson sits just four points shy of No. 2 on UAA’s career scoring list (1,666, Hansi Gnad, 1938-87).

Meanwhile, Fain scored 16 points and dished a career-best eight assists, along with a game-high nine rebounds. McGill shots 8 of 14 from the floor and committed just one turnover, and junior guard Dom Hunter came off the bench with 15 points on 4-of-5 three-point accuracy.

The Seawolves drained 19 of 42 three-pointers against SMU’s zone defense, equaling the fifth-most makes and the establishing the fourth-most attempts in program history.

All four UAA seniors had efficient outings, with center Brad Mears accounting for seven points and five rebounds, and guard Boomer Blossom grabbing five rebounds. Freshman center Kalidou Diouf added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and six rebounds.

The Seawolves will take the court against Thursday at 3:15 or 5:30 p.m. (Alaska time) in the GNAC Tournament quarterfinals, against either Central Washington or Western Washington. Check back at GoSeawolves.com later for the update.

NOTES: UAA has now finished among the top four in the GNAC standings for five straight seasons … Thompson earned his 80th victory in a Seawolf uniform to move alone in second place on the program’s all-time list … Thompson scored double figures for the 20th consecutive game and Fain did it for the ninth time in a row … Hunter has scored double figures in 10 of his last 11 outings … Thompson has made at least one three-pointer in 42 consecutive games – also No. 2 on the Seawolves’ all-time list.
