UAA's Orton named head coach at Western Wyoming

ANCHORAGE (May 11) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball assistant coach Ryan Orton has been named the next head coach at Western Wyoming Community College, the Rock Springs, Wyo., school announced Friday.

“It is with both sadness and excitement that we say goodbye to Coach Orton,” said Seawolves head coach Rusty Osborne. “He has been an integral part of our success over the last three years. We will miss his contributions, both on the floor and in the community, and I personally will miss our day-to-day working relationship.

Osborne’s top assistant since 2009, Orton helped UAA to a 64-27 record during his tenure, including consecutive NCAA Tournament Second Round berths in 2010-11 and 2011-12. He was also largely responsible for the recruitment of three Alaska high school players-of-the-year, 2012 Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year Taylor Rohde, and numerous top junior-college and other prep standouts.

“I am very thankful to Dr. Steve Cobb and Coach Osborne for helping me get back into coaching after a season away,” Orton said. “My time at UAA and with Seawolf basketball was very rewarding both personally and professionally.  As I enter a new chapter I will certainly miss working with all the great people associated with Seawolf Athletics.  I also want to thank the players for their efforts toward the success we have had both on and off the floor. I enjoyed working with great kids who will continue to keep Seawolf basketball at a high level of excellence and a group the fans can be proud of.”

At WWCC, Orton inherits a Mustangs program that finished 23-9 last season, advancing to the NJCAA Region IX playoffs.

"We are genuinely excited that Coach Orton has the opportunity now to lead his own program and progress in his career,” Osborne added. “He has shown the ability as not only a good strategic coach, but one who has represented us with class and professionalism throughout the State of Alaska.  I have no doubt that he is going to be a success in all his future endeavors and bring these same attributes to Western Wyoming.  I look forward to watching him from afar and helping him in any way possible.”

UAA men ink Colorado PG Jalen Little

ANCHORAGE (May 7) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team landed another top prep commitment Monday when head coach Rusty Osborne announced that Colorado product Jalen Little has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

Little, a 5-10 point guard from Colorado Springs, averaged 11.6 points, 6.2 assists, 3.7 steals, 3.1 rebounds and a 4-to-1 assist-turnover ratio for Sierra High School in 2011-12, helping the Stallions to a 26-2 record and a runner-up finish at the Class 4A State Tournament.

Despite playing only the second semester of his senior season due to Colorado transfer rules, Little garnered honorable mention all-state accolades from the Denver Post, 2nd Team All-Metro Team honors from the Colorado Springs Gazette and recognition on the prestigious John Bailey All-Colorado Boys Basketball Team.

Little played his freshman through junior seasons at Palmer High School, earning all-conference honors three times. As a junior in 2010-11, he led the Terrors to an 18-6 record and the 5A Colorado Springs Metro title.

“We are thrilled that Jalen has decided to join our program,” said Osborne, who has guided UAA to 47 wins over the past two seasons. “He is a fine young man who fit right in with our team when he visited. Jalen is extremely quick and will bring a different dimension to both our offensive and defensive schemes. He has the ability to create for others or to go get his own shot. His athleticism should bring a lot of excitement to campus over the next four years.”

Little also played for the Colorado Chaos – one of the premier AAU squads in the Rocky Mountain region – and finished No. 17 on the club’s career scoring list with 1,250 points.

“Most importantly, Jalen is a winner,” Osborne added. “He has been well coached by a pair of highly respected coaches with Terry Dunn at Sierra and Dave Mathews of the Colorado Chaos.”

Little’s signing brings UAA’s 2012-13 recruiting class to three players, joining fall commitments Collin Spickerman (F, 6-9/205, West Linn, Ore./Jesuit HS) and John Erickson (G, 6-4/185, Sisters, Ore.).

UAA is an NCAA Div. II program that plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves posted a 23-7 record last season, earning their second straight NCAA Tournament 2nd Round appearance and finishing No. 16 in the D-II top-25 poll.
