Seawolves sign NorCal JC standout Pomrehn

Seawolves sign NorCal JC standout Pomrehn

ANCHORAGE (July 13) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne has added another versatile guard to his 2016-17 roster, announcing Wednesday that junior college transfer Ashton Pomrehn has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Seawolves.

The 6-3, 185-pounder was an All-Golden Valley Conference performer for Shasta College in Redding, Calif., as a sophomore last season. Pomrehn led his team with 14.6 points per game – 8th in the GVC – and 7.4 rebounds per game, along with 2.8 assists per game and shooting numbers of .433 overall, .419 from long range and .776 on free throws.

The Arcata, Calif., native helped Shasta finish 15-12 overall by posting five 20-point performances during the second half of the season, including a career-high 28 points against Umpqua. As a prep standout at McKinleyville High School, he was a second team all-area pick by The (Eureka) Times-Standard after leading his team to the second round of the North Coast Section playoffs as a senior.

“We are excited to have Ashton join our program,” said Osborne, who has led the Seawolves to 11 straight winning campaigns. “We needed another versatile guard to add depth, and he is a perfect fit with this group. Ashton has the ability to play all three backcourt positions, has excellent passing skills, shoots a high percentage, and rebounds at a high level for a guard. His basketball IQ and skill set will complement our returners.”

Pomrehn becomes the second newcomer to join the Seawolves in 2016-17, along with 6-10 senior post Connor Devine (Wasilla HS/South Dakota State). UAA returns five starters and 10 total letterwinners from last year’s 21-11 squad, including National Player of the Year candidate Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs.

“Although our recruiting class was small,” Osborne added, “we feel both Ashton and Connor are great fits who will make our team much more balanced.”

The Seawolves – who play in the NCAA Div. II Great Northwest Athletic Conference – open the season with their annual Green & Gold Intrasquad scrimmage Oct. 21 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Former Wasilla star Devine joins Seawolves for final campaign

Former Wasilla star Devine joins Seawolves for final campaign

ANCHORAGE (May 31) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne made a sizeable addition to his 2016-17 roster Tuesday with the announcement that former Alaska prep star Connor Devine has signed a scholarship agreement to play his final season with the Seawolves.

Devine, a 6-10, 225-pound forward/center, comes back to his home state after spending four seasons at Div. I program South Dakota State, where he redshirted as a true freshman. The 2012 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year played in 77 career games for the Jackrabbits, averaging 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.7 blocks, while shooting  56 percent in a reserve role. He was a part of SDSU squads that posted a combined 69-32 record and made three straight postseason appearances, including an NCAA Tournament berth in 2015-16.

“We are excited to announce the addition of Connor to our program,” said Osborne, who has led the Seawolves to 11 straight winning seasons. “With only one scholarship available, we really needed to fill the spot with an impact player. We feel that Connor fills this need on all levels. He is an elite defender around the rim who can block shots at a high level and shore up our interior defense. On the offensive end, he has become a very good low post scorer with both hands, but also has the ability with his athleticism to be very good in our ball screen offense. He runs the floor very well and can catch the ball on the move.”

As a three-time All-Northern Lights Conference performer at Wasilla High School, Devine led the Warriors to three straight ASAA Class 4A State Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2010 and a third-place showing in 2012. As a senior, he was the NLC Player of the Year, averaging 20.1 points, 14.6 rebounds and 8.0 blocks per game, and posting eight triple-doubles for a WHS team that finished 23-4. The honor roll student also put up 15.5 ppg, 10.7 rpg and 5.3 bpg as a junior and 13.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg as a sophomore.

“Because of injuries and inexperience, we really struggled to find both offensive and defensive consistency from our low posts last year,” Osborne added. “However, with Connor and our returners, we feel this will now be a strength for us, and allow Corey (Hammell) and others to concentrate on their natural positions. In addition, Connor brings many intangibles, including the experience of winning at a high level and competing in the NCAA Tournament. Off the floor, he will be an excellent role model and student as he works toward a second degree after graduating in May from South Dakota State.”

Devine – whose sister Alysha is a returning starter and senior-to-be on the UAA women’s team – will join a Seawolf team that returns five starters and 10 total letterwinners from last year’s 21-11 squad, including National Player of the Year candidate Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs.

UAA's Wiggs voted Third Team All-American by SIDs

EDINBORO, Pa. (Mar. 21) – Alaska Anchorage junior Sekou 'Suki' Wiggs earned one of the nation's highest honors Monday, being selected to the D2CCA NCAA Div. II All-America Third Team in voting by the nation's sports information directors.

A transfer from the University of Idaho, the 6-4 guard was already a unanimous All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team selection and the GNAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the league and ranking 11th nationally with 24.1 points per game. Wiggs also posted league ranks of third in rebounding (7.3 rpg), ninth in assists (3.3 apg), third in steals (1.6 spg), first in defensive rebounding (6.2 drpg) and first in minutes (34.9 mpg).

"This is a well-earned honor for Suki and our program," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "He has worked hard and put in many hours to improve his skills and help us be successful. To be chosen as one of only two juniors on the three teams is a reflection of the outstanding season he had.  I'm sure this will motivate him to even greater heights next year."

The Seattle (O'Dea HS) native started the season with a UAA- and GNAC-record streak of 21 straight 20-plus scoring efforts – the longest streak in NCAA Div. II in the least four seasons – and finished the season with nine such efforts in a row.

After scoring 85 points in the last three games, he rose to No. 2 on UAA's single-season scoring list with 770 points, while crushing the previous school record for free throws with 243. Wiggs scored at least 30 points on six occasions and posted eight double-doubles, while also leading the Seawolves with 21 blocks.

Wiggs – who broke Glenn Robinson's 23-year-old GCI Great Alaska Shootout scoring record with a 98-point explosion against three D-I opponents in November – becomes the 11th Seawolf in 39 years to earn 1st-, 2nd- or 3rd-team All-America honors, and the first since Taylor Rohde in 2011-12.

UAA finished 21-11 overall this season and tied for third place in the GNAC with a 14-6 mark.

UAA's Wiggs among Bevo Francis Award top 25 finalists

BAKER, Kan. (Mar. 16) – Alaska Anchorage junior Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs has been selected among the top 25 watch-list finalists for the first Bevo Francis Award, which will be presented this spring to the best men’s college basketball player outside of the NCAA Div. I ranks.

It is the second major honor this week for Wiggs, who was recognized Monday on the five-player D2CCA First Team All-West Region honors in voting by sports information directors.

“This is the inaugural year for this award, but it has implemented a very thorough evaluation system and has a distinguished panel making the decisions,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “Suki showed this year that he’s among the elite players at our level, and this is well deserved recognition.”

A transfer from the University of Idaho, the 6-4 guard was a unanimous All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team selection and the GNAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the league and ranking 11th in NCAA Div. II with 24.1 points per game. Wiggs also posted league ranks of third in rebounding (7.3 rpg), ninth in assists (3.3 apg), third in steals (1.6 spg), first in defensive rebounding (6.2 drpg) and first in minutes (34.9 mpg).

Wiggs scored at least 30 points on six occasions and posted eight double-doubles, while also leading the Seawolves with 21 blocks.

Named for former Rio Grande star Clarence ‘Bevo’ Francis, the new award is presented  by SmallCollegeBasketball.com. The next round of finalists will be announced Apr. 1.

LACEY, Wash. (Mar. 3) – Junior guard Suki Wiggs led an Alaska Anchorage comeback effort with 20 points and 12 rebounds Thursday but the 3rd-seeded Seawolves could not complete a three-game season sweep of 6th-seeded Western Washington, falling 78-73 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Marcus Pavilion.

Senior guard Brian McGill had 16 points in his final game and junior forward Corey Hammell added 12 points and nine rebounds for UAA – ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Div. II West Region – which finishes the season with a 21-11 record.

The Vikings (16-14) got a game-high 31 points from junior forward Jeffrey Parker and an 11-point, 12-rebound effort from senior forward Kyle Impero, both of whom played all 40 minutes.

“I’m proud of the way we fought back today, especially with foul trouble on some of our key players,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “We battled adversity all year long with injuries, but the one thing we never lacked was effort. With the bulk of the team returning, I feel very positive about our outlook for 2016-17.”

Already with an 87-84 home win and a 108-105 double-overtime road win against WWU in the regular season, the Seawolves got off to another strong start, grabbing a 21-15 lead on Spencer Svejcar’s three-pointer midway through the first half.

The Vikings responded with a 17-3 run, however, and pushed their lead to 39-30 at halftime. WWU led 44-35 early in the second half before UAA finally caught fire, scoring seven straight points and regaining the lead, 47-46, on Christian Leckband’s corner trey at the 15:15 mark.

Wiggs hit a free throw to put the Seawolves ahead 53-49 with 11:59 to go, but the Vikings quickly answered with four straight points from Impero. The game was tied three more times in the next four minutes until Parker swished the go-ahead trey at the 7:38 mark.

Despite falling behind 73-65 with 2:40 left, the Seawolves got a pair of key defensive stops and sliced it to a 75-73 game on Wiggs’s fast-break feed to Leckband with 25 seconds to play. Impero was fouled and missed the second of his two free throws, leaving the Seawolves with the ball and 11 seconds on the clock.

McGill penetrated and found Wiggs open in the corner for a three-pointer, but the GNAC Newcomer of the Year’s attempt bounced high off the rim and into the hands of the Vikings with 0.8 showing.

Wiggs added four steals and three assists, while Leckband and Svejcar finished with seven points apiece.

NOTES: UAA shot 23 of 27 from the free-throw line to improve its final team percentage to .804, easily breaking the previous program record of .782 in 2008-09 … the 703 total free throws made and 874 attempted also crushed the old marks of 563 and 817, both from 1989-90 … Wiggs scored at least 20 points for the ninth straight game and the 30th time in 32 games this year; the First Team All-GNAC performer started the year with a 21-game streak of 20-plus – the longest in D-II in at least five years … Wiggs’s 770 points finish No. 2 on UAA’s single-season scoring list, trailing only the 813 points by Jesse Jackson in 1986-87 … McGill went 4 of 4 from the charity stripe Thursday to finish with a UAA single-season record .933 percentage (98 of 105) … McGill completed his career at No. 11 on UAA’s career scoring list with 1,193 points and No. 2 in assists with 403 … Leckband appeared in his 115th career game, tying Adam Fitt-Chappell (2002-06) and Steve White (2008-12) for No. 6 on UAA’s all-time list … Wiggs’s double-double was his eighth this year, while Hammell missed his 15th double-double by just one rebound … McGill and Leckband were the only seniors on this year’s team.
