UAA's Barker honored by NABC

SPOKANE, Wash. – Alaska Anchorage senior Kenny Barker added another postseason honor to his resume Friday when he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' West Region All-District Team.

A unanimous All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team honoree, the 6-3 guard earned Second Team honors from the NABC, recognizing him as one of the top 12 players in the 27-team West Region.

Barker, a 6-3 guard from San Diego, Calif. (Claremont HS), ranked among the GNAC's top 10 in seven different statistical categories, and was the only player to do so in scoring (18.7 ppg, 4th), rebounding (6.3 rpg, 9th) and assists (4.2 apg, 5th). In league games only, he ranked second in scoring (20.4 ppg) and dished 4.9 assists per game.

A former second-team all-league selection when he played for Alaska Fairbanks in 2006-07, the transfer finished in the GNAC's career top 20 in 13 different categories, including No. 14 in scoring (1,501 pts) and rebounds (589), and No. 13 in assists (341).

In his lone season at UAA, Barker reached the 20-point mark in 15 games, including a GNAC-season-high 38 points in a home victory over UAF. That outing on Jan. 31 also tied him for No. 8 on UAA's single-game scoring list and was the most ever for a Seawolf against the Nanooks.

In November, Barker made the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team, leading UAA to a victory over Division I program Louisiana Tech with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Barker helped the Seawolves overcome an 0-5 start to their season to post a final mark of 15-14, giving UAA its fourth straight winning season.

ASU Takes Thriller Over Pacer, 65-64

ASU Takes Thriller Over Pacers, 65-64
No. 5 Jaguars win first PBC Tournament Championship since 2002
Web Posted 3/8/09

AIKEN, S.C. -- – In a Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship
game that more than lived up to its pre-game billing, the fifth-ranked
Augusta State Jaguars won a thrilling 65-64 showdown over 17th-ranked
USC Aiken on Sunday afternoon at the USCA Convocation Center.

The title marked the third Peach Belt Conference Tournament
championship in school history for ASU, and the Jags' first tournament
championship since 2002. It also represented the first PBC Tournament
title for ASU under fifth-year head coach Dip Metress.

With the win, the Jags (26-4) became the first PBC regular-season
champion to also claim the tournament title since Kennesaw State pulled
off the feat in 2004. The victory extended the ASU winning streak to 12
straight, the third-longest in school history. The Jags improved to
17-7 vs. nationally-ranked opponents under Metress, including 5-3 this
season.

The contest featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, and neither team had
more than a six-point lead throughout. In the second half alone, there
were nine ties and 11 lead changes.

ASU built a 52-47 lead on an offensive rebound and putback by sophomore
guard Caleb Brown with 8:54 left. Senior center Garrett Siler stretched
the lead to six points on a 3-point play at the 8:36 mark. However, USC
Aiken (23-7) used an 8-0 run to take a 57-55 lead on a driving layup by
Javonte Clanton.

The Jags moved back in front on two Ben Madgen free throws with 2:53
remaining, but USC Aiken countered with a jump shot off the glass by
Josh Dollard to take a 64-62 lead at the 2:03 mark.

That would be the final field goal scored by either team down the
stretch. Madgen put ASU back up for good with two free throws with 1:25
remaining, but there was plenty of drama and excitement in the waning
moments.

USC Aiken had two opportunities to go in front. However, Chris Commons
missed an open 3-point attempt with 58 seconds remaining. And after
forcing ASU into a missed shot, Cordaryl Ballard had an open alley in
the lane in the final seconds, but his short five-footer was off the
mark.

ASU's Madgen sealed his PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors with
23 points and added six rebounds. Siler carded 13 points and two
blocks, while junior guard Daniel Dixon chipped in 10 points and four
assists. Junior forward Greg Hire netted eight points and a game-high
10 rebounds.

USCA's Clanton scored 16 points, followed by Ballard with 15 points.
Dollard and Commons each scored 14 points for the Pacers.

Joining ASU's Madgen and Dixon on the All-Tournament Team were Commons
and Dollard along with Shaun Keaton from Georgia College & State and
Armstrong Atlantic State's Calvin Wilson.

ANCHORAGE (Mar. 7) – Kenny Barker scored 24 points to reach a career milestone and backcourt mate Kevin White tossed in 20 points Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team ended its season with a decisive 95-69 win over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Senior center Jeremiah Trueman chipped in 19 points and seven rebounds in his final collegiate game for UAA (15-14, 9-7 GNAC), which earned its fourth straight winning season and the 26th in the program’s 32 years.

Western Oregon (10-17, 4-12) was led by 17 points and seven rebounds from Palmer, Alaska, native Stanley Ratcliff, Jr.

But the night belonged to Barker and the Seawolves, who used an early 17-6 run to take complete control. White (7-11 FG, 6-10 3FG, 6 rebounds) ended that spurt with a three-pointer to put UAA up 30-16 at the 9:08 mark, and the Seawolves pushed the lead to 50-25 with the first two baskets of the second half.

UAA forged its largest advantage, 86-58, at the 2:47 mark on a jumper by Trueman (8-17 FG).

With just 46 seconds left, Western Oregon accidentally called a timeout it didn’t have, leading to a pair of technical free throws for Barker. The senior transfer from Alaska Fairbanks swished both charities, giving him a career total of 1,501 points. He also equaled his career-high and UAA’s season-best with eight assists.

Lonnie Ridgeway added 15 points on 6-of-8 field-goal shooting (3-3 FT), while fellow sophomore guard Brandon Walker had 9 points on 3-of-4 marksmanship.

The Seawolves shot 54 percent (33-61) from the field, 50 percent (10-20) from three-point range, and 79 percent (19-24) from the free-throw line, with the charity shooting earning UAA a school season record with a .782 team free-throw percentage.
