UAA signs Utah JC standout (CORRECTED)

CORRECTS SPELLING OF STUDENT-ATHLETE’S NAME THROUGHOUT …

ANCHORAGE (July 16) – Head coach Rusty Osborne added another accomplished junior-college guard to the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball roster Thursday when he announced that Donnie Lao has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

Lao, 6-2, 190 pounds, comes to UAA from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where he dished 241 assists in his two seasons. As a sophomore last year, he earned All-Scenic West Athletic Conference Second Team honors after averaging 10.8 points, 3.7 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and shooting 48 percent from the field, 41 percent on three-pointers, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

“As an all-league performer in one of the best JC leagues in the country, Donnie gives us a very talented and experienced point guard in our backcourt,” said Osborne. “He can distribute the ball, but is also a great shooter with the ability to score. He comes from a defensive-minded system, which should make an easier transition into our program.”

Lao played his prep ball at Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah, where he gained first-team all-state and Region 2 MVP honors as a senior. He was also second-team all-state as a junior, leading the Huskies to back-to-back region titles.

“Donnie has demonstrated tremendous toughness and leadership both in high school and junior college,” Osborne added. “I believe the combination of Donnie, Steve White and Bryce Arnott gives us three talented point guards for the present and the future.”

Lao is UAA’s fourth commitment this summer, joining Arnott (Fr., G, 6-1, 185, Clyde, Australia), Division I transfer Malcolm Campbell (So., C, 6-9, 255, Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax HS/Hartford), and fellow JC transfer and former SWAC rival Drew Robinson (Jr., G., 6-1, 175, Lehi, Utah/Hillcrest HS/Salt Lake CC).

Seawolves gain sizable D-I transfer

ANCHORAGE (July 13) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball program got a big boost in the middle Monday as head coach Rusty Osborne announced that Division I transfer Malcolm Campbell, of Los Angeles, Calif., has signed a scholarship agreement.

Campbell, a 6-9, 255-pound center, comes to UAA after two years at the University of Hartford (Conn.), where he saw limited action in his redshirt freshman season in 2008-09. The largest player on the current Seawolf roster, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“Malcolm gives us a true post presence inside,” Osborne said. “His size, along with his ability to finish plays, will help open up our perimeter shooters. In addition, he also has the ability to step out and hit a jump shot himself.”

As a three-year letterwinner at storied Fairfax High School, Campbell was a major contributor on the 2006-07 Lions team that won the L.A. City and CIF Southern Section State titles. He averaged 11 points and 9 rebounds as FHS went 28-5 and was nationally ranked much of the season.

“Although he has yet to play big minutes in college, Malcolm played at a very high level in high school and has the chance to be a force in our league,” added Osborne, who is 93-57 in five seasons as UAA’s head coach. “He runs the floor extremely well and has a skill set that is conducive to our system. Defensively his size and wingspan will be an added dimension. We expect Malcolm to have a tremendous impact at UAA the next three years.”

Campbell is UAA’s third commitment this summer, joining incoming freshman Bryce Arnott (6-1, 185, G, Clyde, Australia) and junior college transfer Drew Robinson (6-1, 175, G, Lehi, Utah/Salt Lake CC).
