ANCHORAGE (July 16) – Head coach Rusty Osborne added another accomplished junior-college guard to the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball roster Thursday when he announced that Donnie Lau has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.
Lau, 6-2, 190 pounds, comes to UAA from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where he dished 241 assists in his two seasons. As a sophomore last year, he earned All-Scenic West Athletic Conference Second Team honors after averaging 10.8 points, 3.7 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and shooting 48 percent from the field, 41 percent on three-pointers, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
“As an all-league performer in one of the best JC leagues in the country, Donnie gives us a very talented and experienced point guard in our backcourt,” said Osborne. “He can distribute the ball, but is also a great shooter with the ability to score. He comes from a defensive-minded system, which should make an easier transition into our program.”
Lau played his prep ball at Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah, where he gained first-team all-state and Region 2 MVP honors as a senior. He was also second-team all-state as a junior, leading the Huskies to back-to-back region titles.
“Donnie has demonstrated tremendous toughness and leadership both in high school and junior college,” Osborne added. “I believe the combination of Donnie, Steve White and Bryce Arnott gives us three talented point guards for the present and the future.”
Lau is UAA’s fourth commitment this summer, joining Arnott (Fr., G, 6-1, 185, Clyde, Australia), Division I transfer Malcolm Campbell (So., C, 6-9, 255, Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax HS/Hartford), and fellow JC transfer and former SWAC rival Drew Robinson (Jr., G., 6-1, 175, Lehi, Utah/Hillcrest HS/Salt Lake CC).
