LACEY, Wash. (Feb. 17) – Mario Gill scored 16 points but the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team came up short in a 60-54 loss Thursday to Saint Martin’s at Marcus Pavilion.

UAA (18-8, 10-5 GNAC) also got eight points and six points from senior forward Casey Robinson, however the Seawolves could not capitalize on an early 18-4 lead.

The Saints (13-12, 6-9), meanwhile, got 17 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Blake Poole, plus 11 points apiece from forwards Roger O’Neill and Jeremy Green. Green also had a game-high nine rebounds to help SMU earn a split of the regular-season series.

The Seawolves went ahead 23-14 on a short jumper from junior guard Lonnie Ridgeway at the 4:49 mark of the first half but the Saints answered with the final 10 points of the stanza to take a lead into the locker room.

SMU then opened the second half with a 12-2 spurt before UAA could respond. The Seawolves answered with a jumper by Gill (5-12 FG, 3-5 3FG, 3-3 FT) and a three-pointer from Robinson to make it 37-30 at the 12:44 mark, and drew within 53-52 on a trey from Gill with 3:29 remaining.

The Seawolves got stops on their next two defensive possessions but could not take advantage on the offensive end, and Poole extended the home team’s lead on a pair of free throws with 2:10 showing. UAA could not convert again on its next three trips and the Saints sealed the game at the free throw line.

SMU went 18 of 23 at the charity stripe, while UAA made just eight trips to the line, converting seven.

The Seawolves, who were beginning a six-day, three-game road trip, travel next to Monmouth, Ore., to face Western Oregon on Saturday (6 p.m. AST). UAA then closes the regular season with an away-and-home series against Alaska Fairbanks on Tuesday and Wednesday. The season finale at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex will be shown live regionally on Fox Sports Net.

UAA women 4th, men 7th in regional polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 16) – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team remained No. 4 in the latest Division II regional rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA, while the Seawolf men dropped to No. 7.

 

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds four of the top 10 places in the men’s rankings with No. 1 Central Washington, No. 6 Seattle Pacific, No. 7 UAA and No. 10 Western Washington. The Seawolves (18-7 overall, 13-6 vs. D-II) fell from fourth to seventh place after splitting home games against WWU (106-102 loss) and Simon Fraser (99-81 win) last week. The top three positions stayed the same, while Dixie State (4th), Chaminade (5th) and SPU (6th) moved ahead of UAA.

 

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds three of the top nine places, with No. 2 Western Washington, No. 4 UAA (21-5, 20-4) and No. 9 Seattle Pacific. The top four places in the women’s poll remained the same, while early-season Seawolf opponent UC San Diego moved into the rankings for the first time at No. 10.

 

Only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be two more regional polls before the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 6.

 

Both Seawolf teams are on the road this week, with the men facing Saint Martin’s on Thursday and Western Oregon on Saturday. The women, ranked No. 14 nationally, play No. 6 Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday.

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 12) – Mario Gill scored a career-high 23 points and Casey Robinson added 19 points and six rebounds Saturday to help Alaska Anchorage overcome a challenge from Simon Fraser for a 99-81 men’s basketball victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (18-7, 10-4 GNAC), ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, got double-figure scoring from all five of their starters, plus big bench contributions from reserves Travis Thompson and Liam Gibcus.

The Clan (3-17, 2-12) was led by 30 points and four assists from Justin Brown, while fellow junior guard Ricky Berry tallied 22 points for the first-year Great Northwest Athletic Conference members.

UAA led 50-43 at halftime when Robinson drained a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer, but the visitors from Burnaby, British Columbia, came out hot in the second half and took a 54-52 lead on Berry’s three-pointer at the 16:35 mark.

Junior center Taylor Rohde would put the Seawolves back on top for good, however, with a pair of free throws that made it 57-56 with 15 minutes left.

Despite their last-place standing, the Clan kept hanging tough and pulled within 72-69 on two free throws from Brown with 6:23 remaining. But Gibcus answered for UAA on the next possession with a 15-foot jumper and Gill continued the deciding run with a steal and a breakaway layup.

Gill scored all 17 of his second-half points in the final 5:43 to help the Seawolves ice the win. The 6-2 junior from Portland, Ore., made all 11 of his free throws and finished with four assists, three steals and no turnovers in 23 minutes.

Meanwhile, Rohde had 13 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks as the junior center extended his double-digit scoring streak to 19 games. Senior point guard Drew Robinson tallied 11 points and a game-high six assists, and senior wing Brandon Walker finished with 10 points.

The Seawolves posted a 21-11 advantage in bench scoring as Thompson had nine points on 3-of-5 shooting. Gibcus, a 6-10 sophomore center, produced his best game of the season with eight points on perfect shooting (2-2 FG, 4-4 FT), plus three rebounds and a block.

The game was slowed by 56 personal and three technical fouls, resulting in 68 total free throws.

Combined with Seattle Pacific’s 81-70 loss at Northwest Nazarene earlier Saturday, the Seawolves’ victory moved them into a second-place tie with Western Washington in the GNAC standings.

UAA is on the road for its next three games, beginning Thursday at Saint Martin’s (6:30 p.m. AST), before finishing the regular season at home on Jan. 23 against Alaska Fairbanks.
