UAA signs JC transfer, former Ore. prep star Mike MacKelvie

ANCHORAGE (May 17) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team added more experience and versatility to its 2012-13 roster Thursday as head coach Rusty Osborne announced that junior-college standout and former Oregon prep star Mike MacKelvie has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

A 6-4, 190-pound wing, MacKelvie comes to UAA from Eastern Arizona College, where he averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals over his 2-year career. As a sophomore in 2011-12, he shot 46 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line to help the Gila Monsters to a 21-10 record, a top-20 national ranking and a spot in the NJCAA Region I playoffs.

“We have followed Mike since high school and are excited that he will become a Seawolf,” said Osborne, who has currently guided UAA to two straight NCAA Div. II Tournament second-round berths. “His strength is as an athlete who can attack the basket, making him a perfect complement to our other wings. He is also an excellent offensive rebounder and has the size to be a very good defender in our system. We’re looking forward to having him in the program the next two years.”

The Wilsonville, Ore., product had a storied prep career at his hometown Wilsonville (Ore.) High School, earning First Team All-State and Northwest Oregon Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2009-10. MacKelvie left WHS as his school’s all-time leader in rebounds (451) and steals (182), along with single-game marks for points (33) and steals (9), and the single-season scoring record (496 pts/17.1 ppg) as a junior. An 11-time varsity letterwinner in three sports, he was also an all-state selection as a receiver and defensive back in football.

MacKelvie becomes the fourth member of UAA’s 2012-13 recruiting class, joining high school signees John Erickson (G, 6-4/185, Sisters, Ore.), Jalen Little (PG, 5-10/160, Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra HS) and Collin Spickerman (F, 6-9/205, West Linn, Ore./Jesuit HS).

UAA plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves posted a 23-7 record last season, earning their second straight NCAA Tournament 2nd Round appearance and finishing No. 16 in the D-II top-25 poll.

Seawolves elevate Turner to MBB assistant

ANCHORAGE (May 14) – Cameron Turner has been promoted to the role of assistant coach with the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team, Seawolves head coach Rusty Osborne announced Monday.

“Cameron has proven to be hard worker, and he has a good mind for the game,” said Osborne. “We are very pleased any time we can promote quality from within, which is certainly the case with him.”

During his first season with UAA in 2011-12, Turner served as the graduate assistant coach for a Seawolf squad that went 23-7 and advanced to the NCAA Div. II Tournament 2nd Round.

“I’d like to thank Coach Osborne for this opportunity,” said Turner, who hails from Lake Oswego, Ore. “It has been a lifelong dream of mine to coach NCAA basketball, and I’m proud to do so at a program with UAA’s rich tradition.”

Turner came north after a successful 6-year run coaching the Willamette Reign AAU program in his home state. A 2004 graduate of Southern Oregon University, Turner is currently pursuing his masters degree in human services at UAA.

Turner replaces Ryan Orton, who was recently named head coach at Western Wyoming Community College.
