ANCHORAGE (Sept. 24) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that sophomore guard John Erickson will be leaving the program, effective immediately. Erickson, who was scheduled to redshirt this year, averaged 1.2 ppg last year as a reserve behind First Team All-GNAC guard Kyle Fossman.
“After visiting with John and his parents, and exploring all options, we have determined that it would be in John’s best interest to return home to Oregon immediately,” said Osborne. “It is with sadness we say goodbye to John, as he was a tremendous worker in our program both on and off the floor, and has a very bright future. He was always willing to do the things necessary to make our program better, whether in conditioning activities, volunteering in the community, or helping out within Seawolf Athletics. As evidence of John’s selflessness, he spent the summer in Anchorage as an unpaid full time intern at the Anchorage zoo. John will be missed by our entire athletic community.”
From Sisters, Ore., Erickson was also a member of UAA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
“After counseling with my parents, I have determined that for my well being, I need to make a transition in my life,” Erickson said. “This is not an easy decision, as I have truly enjoyed my time as a Seawolf. The experiences I have had with my coaches and teammates have been very special, and I will always consider myself a Seawolf.”
