BURNABY, British Columbia (Jan. 30) – Travis Thompson scored 25 points, including the game-winning layup with 3.8 seconds remaining, to help the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team edge Simon Fraser 65-64 at the SFU West Gym on Thursday night.

The Seawolves (13-8, 6-4 GNAC) also got eight points and 10 rebounds from junior swingman Teancum Stafford as they won their third straight road game, including the last two by one point.

The Clan (8-10, 1-9) were led by 18 points from guard Justin Cole, plus 10 points and 11 rebounds from forward Ibrahim Appiah, as they lost despite jumping to a 30-13 lead in just more than 10 minutes.

After pulling within 41-32 at halftime, UAA clamped down on the defensive end and grabbed its first lead, 46-45, on a three-pointer from Thompson at the 14:36 mark. The teams then traded big runs, with the Seawolves building a 57-51 deficit, only to see the Clan score the next nine points.

Seawolf point guard Brian McGill (14 points, 4 assists) drove for a layup with 5:42 remaining, then converted a pair of free throws to make it a 61-60 advantage with 4:48 left. Thompson, a 6-1 junior guard, connected again from short range to go up 63-60 at the 4:05 mark.

The Seawolves would go cold over the next four minutes, however, and SFU regained a 64-63 lead on a short jumper by Taylor Dunn with 1:44 on the clock. UAA senior Kyle Fossman (11 points) pulled down a big defensive rebound on a long jumper by Dunn with 41 seconds left, and head coach Rusty Osborne whistled timeout with 16 seconds to draw up a final play.

After almost having it knocked away, UAA’s Colton Lauwers picked up the ball in the corner and faked a three-point shot before finding former Dimond High School teammate Thompson, who had established post position under the basket. Thompson collected the pass and finished the play, prompting the Clan to call a final timeout.

SFU got the ball to guard Sango Niang, who took two steps beyond the midcourt line and fired a shot that bounced off the backboard and rim as the buzzer sounded.

Thompson, who shot just 3 of 11 from long range, was 5 of 6 from inside the arc, along with 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. The Seawolves shot 15 of 17 (88.2 percent) from the charity stripe and outrebounded the Clan 35-30 to overcome a poor field-goal shooting performance, hitting only 35 percent (21-60) to SFU’s 49 percent (25-51).

Thompson’s nine rebounds also marked a career-high as the Preseason All-GNAC selection went over 25 points for the fifth straight game. It was his 15th game this year with at least 20 points, including 13 of the last 15 contests.

The Seawolves finish their 4-game road swing Saturday with an 8 p.m. AST tip against Western Washington in a game to be televised regionally on ROOT Sports Northwest (GCI Ch. 36 in Anchorage).

NOTES: Thompson rose to No. 18 on UAA’s career scoring list, now with 1,029 points … Fossman now sits at 1,057 points, leaving him 28 points shy of the top 15.

UAA's Stafford earns Academic All-District with 4.0

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 30) – Alaska Anchorage’s Teancum Stafford was named Thursday to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Men’s Basketball Team, recognizing  the junior as one of the top five student-athletes among the 32 schools of the NCAA Division II West Region.

The 6-5 guard/forward from Auburn, Wash., was honored for his 4.00 overall grade-point average as a psychology major, plus his outstanding play on the court for the Seawolves.

In his second year at UAA after transferring from Snow (Utah) College, Stafford leads the Seawolves and ranks third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 8.2 rebounds per game, while his scoring average of 13.9 ppg ranks 16th in the league. Stafford has scored double figures in 38 of his 44 career games at UAA, including a career-high 29 points in a win over then-No. 5 Minnesota State in November. He also has four double-doubles this year for the Seawolves, who sit 12-8 overall and 5-4 in league play at the mid-point of the GNAC campaign.

The Capital One all-district teams are voted on by sports information directors throughout the NCAA’s eight geographical districts, with the Div. II West Region comprised of three leagues – the GNAC, the Pacific West Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Stafford and the other academic all-district honorees now advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

UAA's Thompson shares GNAC Red Lion honor

PORTLAND, Ore. (Jan. 27) – Alaska Anchorage junior Travis Thompson was named the co-recipient of Monday of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball Red Lion Player of the Week award, following a pair of big performances in road wins over Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s.

Thompson, a 6-1 guard, scored 56 points in the two contests to increase his career total to 1,004. He had 29 points in a 92-58 win at Western Oregon on Thursday and 27 in a 79-78 victory at Saint Martin’s on Saturday. In the latter game, he also drew a charge with seven seconds left to secure the win. Thompson, who had six rebounds, five assists and a team-high four steals, shot 59.3 percent from the floor (16 of 27), 52.6 percent from the arc (10 of 19) and 93.3 percent from the foul line (14 of 15).

The local Dimond High School product shared the award with Central Washington’s Mark McLaughlin, who registered back-to-back 40-point performances.

Thompson and the Seawolves (12-8, 5-4 GNAC) return to the road this week for games at Simon Fraser on Thursday (4:15 p.m. AST) and at defending GNAC and West Region champion Western Washington on Saturday (8 p.m.). Saturday’s contest is the featured GNAC Game of the Week on ROOT Sports (GCI channel 36 in Anchorage).

LACEY, Wash. (Jan. 25) –Junior guard Travis Thompson joined Alaska Anchorage’s 1,000-point club in style Saturday, scoring 27 points to lead the Seawolves to a 79-78 victory over Saint Martin’s in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (12-8, 5-4 GNAC) also got 13 points and seven assists from sophomore point guard Brian McGill, who scored the final six points for the visitors, including the winning layup with 58 seconds remaining.

Senior guard Kyle Fossman had 17 points and four assists for UAA, and junior swingman Teancum Stafford tallied 14 points to help Rusty Osborne to his program-record 187th victory as head coach.

The Saints (6-11, 3-6) put five players in double figures, paced by 17 points from guard Evan Coulter, but they could not take advantage of a 24-8 run to start the game.

Saint Martin’s led 27-12 after less than eight minutes and held a 44-37 lead at halftime after UAA twice cut the deficit to six. Coulter nailed a three-pointer to start the second half before Thompson and junior center Brad Mears combined for a personal 9-0 run to slice it to 47-46. Mears finished with eight points and tied his career high with seven rebounds.

Thompson gave the Seawolves their first lead, 52-51 at the 15:29 mark, on a pair of free throws, and the game stayed close. Isaac Bianchini hit one of his five three-pointers to put the hosts ahead 65-61 with 9:54 left, and Fossman answered right back with a three of his own. The game remained a one-possession affair the rest of the way, featuring nine ties and 13 lead changes.

Fossman’s three-pointer with 4 minutes remaining gave UAA a 73-72 lead, and the teams exchanged free throws on their next possessions. SMU center Matt Dodson converted a rebound basket to put his team ahead 76-75, and McGill answered with a driving layup for the Seawolves at the 2:10 mark.

With 1:07 left, Fossman was called for a foul on Coulter, who sank both free throws for a 78-77 advantage. Wasting no time, McGill again slid to the basket, getting a perfect screen from Mears to convert an open layin on the eventual game-winning.

The Saints had two chances to take the lead in the final minute, but Dodson committed a turnover with 44 seconds left and Thompson drew an offensive foul from Coulter with seven seconds remaining. The Saints fouled Stafford with 4.8 seconds showing, however the Auburn, Wash., native missed for free throws off the iron, and SMU’s Brad Norman corralled the rebound. The Seawolves pressured the ball well and forced an off-balance attempt from midcourt by Riley Carel, whose desperation shot caromed off the rim at the buzzer.

UAA shot 57 percent from the field and 50 percent (9 of 18) from three-point range. Thompson went 7 of 11 overall, 4 of 7 on threes, and was perfect on nine free throws. The Dimond High School product became the 21th player in program history to reach 1,000 points (1,004), doing it with at least nine games remaining in his junior season.

Meanwhile, Stafford shot 6 of 8 from the floor (2-4 3FGs), Fossman was 7 of 13 (3-5 3FGs) and Mears was 4 of 6 as the Seawolf starters combined for 47 of their team’s 49 field-goal attempts.

Now at the midpoint of the GNAC schedule, the Seawolves return to the road next week for games at Simon Fraser (Thur., Jan. 30, 4:15 p.m. AST) and at two-time defending GNAC champion Western Washington (Sat., Feb. 1, 8 p.m. AST). Saturday’s WWU game will be featured regionally on ROOT Sports (GCI cable channel 36 in Anchorage) as the GNAC Game of the Week.

NOTES: Former UAA coaching wins leader Charlie Bruns, who now lives just north of Seattle, was in attendance for Saturday’s game … Bruns compiled 186 wins between 1991-2004, serving the entire time with Osborne as his assistant … Fossman pushed his career point total to 1,046, passing Adam Fitt-Chappell (1,045 pts, 2002-06) for No. 16 on the program list … with Fossman and Thompson, the Seawolves have two 1,000-point scorers playing on the same team for the first time since Seawolf Hall of Famers Jesse Jackson (1,471) and Hansi Gnad (1,666) were teammates in 1986-87 … with three assists, Thompson also moved into 20th place on UAA’s career list with 205.
