SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Simon Fraser snapped a 5-game losing streak in emphatic fashion last week, winning 98-73 at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday before falling 96-79 at Central Washington on Saturday … the Clan feature four double-digit scorers, including Justin Cole (13.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.8 spg, .434 3FG) and Sango Niang (13.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.0 apg, .466 3FG) … two-time defending GNAC and West Region champion Western Washington has won three straight — all by seven points or less — since seeing its 36-game home win streak snapped Jan. 15 against Seattle Pacific … the Vikings also have four double-figure scorers in their lineup, led by Austin Bragg (17.3 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.1 bpg, .589 FG) and Richard Woodworth (16.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.8 apg, .503 FG, .833 FT).

SEAWOLVES WIN BLOWOUT, SQUEAKER: The Seawolves earned their first two road victories of the season in contrasting fashions, leading from start-to-finish in a 92-58 win over Western Oregon on Jan. 23 and rallying from a 16-point deficit to beat Saint Martin's 79-78 on Jan. 25 … in the first game, Jr. G Travis Thompson scored 29 points (9-16 FG, 6-12 3FG, 5-6 FT) and Sr. G Kyle Fossman had his first career double-double with 19 points (7-11 FG, 5-9 3FG), 10 rebounds and a career-high-tying 7 assists at WOU as the Seawolves established new program road records for most three-pointers (19) and fewest turnovers (4) … Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford added his fifth double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 boards, while So. PG Brian McGill scored 9 points and dished a game-high 9 assists against his former team … two nights later, the Seawolves rallied from an early 24-8 hole by Thompson's 27 points (7-11 FG, 4-7 3FG, 9-9 FT), holding on for a one-point win when SMU's final halfcourt heave bounced off the rim at the buzzer … Fossman added 17 points (7-13 FG, 3-5 3FG) and 4 assists, Stafford scored 14 points (6-8 FG), and McGill scored 13 points — including UAA's final six — and had 7 assists … Jr. C Brad Mears accounted for 8 points (4-6 FG) and a career-high-tying 8 rebounds as UAA's starters accounted for all 79 points.
TEAM NOTES: With wins No. 186 and 187 last week, UAA head coach Rusty Osborne tied and surpassed former mentor Charlie Bruns (1991-2004) as the program's all-time coaching victories leader … UAA leads NCAA Div. PLAYER NOTES: The reigning GNAC Red Lion co-Player of the Week, Jr. G Travis Thompson, ranks No. 2 in the GNAC and 13th nationally with 22.4 points per game, along with top-10 national marks in 3FGs per game (5th, 3.85), and FT% (9th, .899) … Thompson leads the GNAC in 3FGs per game, along with ranks of 2nd in FT%, 4th in minutes played (34.8 mpg), 8th in steals (1.4 spg), 10th in assist-turnover ratio (2.0), 12th in 3FG% (.418) and 15th in assists (2.8 apg) … coming off a redshirt season, the local Dimond HS … product has tallied double figures in 19 of 20 games, including four times reaching the 30-point plateau … a 2nd-Team All-GNAC pick in 2011-12 and a preseason all-league selection this year, Thompson last week became the 21st member of UAA's 1,000-point club, now with 1,004; with his next point, he will move into the top 20 … on UAA's other career lists, he is 4th in FT% (.871), 5th in 3FGs made (184), 6th in 3FG% (.443), tied for 12th in FTs made (210) and 20th in assists (205); he needs just seven more FTs to move into the top 10 ... Thompson was named Most Outstanding Player of the Nov. 15-16 AT&T Jamboree and made the all-tourney team at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout … along with Thompson, the presence of Sr. G Kyle Fossman gives UAA two 1,000-point scorers in the same lineup for the first time since 1986-87 (Jesse Jackson/Hansi Gnad), with the preseason all-league pick currently ranking 16th on UAA's all-time list with 1,046 points … a First Team All-GNAC pick and team MVP as a junior, Fossman ranks 8th in the GNAC scoring race with 16.0 ppg, boosted by a career-high-tying 28 points in UAA's Shootout loss to Div. I Indiana State … he is also among the league leaders in 3FGs made per game (2nd, 3.5), A-T ratio (3rd, 3.2), minutes (3rd, 34.8), (FT% (6th, .840), 3FG% (8th, .440), and assists (9th, 3.5) … in the NCAA national stats, the team's only 4th-year senior is 9th in 3FGs per game (3.5) and 15th in assist-TO ratio (3.18) … Fossman has risen to 3rd place on UAA's career 3FGs list at 214, meaning he would need to average 3.23 per game to break the Mark Drake's career record (243, 2001-05) during the regular season … Fossman's other Seawolf career ranks include 4th in 3FG% (.451), 7th in FT% (.852), 8th in games started (72), 16th in points (1,046) and assists (220), and 17th in games played (95) … Fossman needs 41 points and four assists to move into the top 15 on those lists, while with two more victories, he will tie Butch Lincoln (69 wins, 1992-97) for 10th … another preseason all-league pick and returning All-GNAC 2nd Team selection, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford sits 16th in the GNAC scoring race with 13.9 ppg, boosted by a career-high 29 points in the 83-72 victory over No. 5 Minnesota State … Stafford is also 3rd in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and 9th in 3FGs per game … since transferring from Snow (Utah) College last year, the Auburn, Wash., native has scored double figures in 38 of 44 appearances, including a current string of nine games … Stafford posted his first back-to-back double-doubles two weeks ago against NNU and CWU, raising his career total to five … set to graduate this May with his degree in psychology, Stafford also owns a 4.0 GPA through three semesters at UAA … So. PG Brian McGill has made a enormous impact in his first year of eligibility since transferring from Western Oregon … after setting the GNAC and UAA single-game record with 20 assists on Dec. 16, McGill ranks No. 2 in the league with 6.4 apg, along with other GNAC ranks of 5th in scoring (17.4 ppg), 6th in asst-TO ratio (2.7), 7th in minutes (33.2 mpg) and 10th in FT% (.826) … the Clackamas, Ore., native was named the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week following his 29-point, 10-assist performance in the league-opening victory over UAF, becoming just the fifth player in 14 years to tally at least 25 points and 10 assists in a GNAC game … nationally, McGill ranks 15th in assists and 33rd in A-T ratio … Sr. G/F Colton Lauwers has been UAA's lunch-pail man, spelling McGill at the point and banging for rebounds at the power forward position … a former Dimond HS teammate of Thompson's, Lauwers in 2nd in the GNAC with a 3.4 A-T ratio, dishing 44 assists with just 13 giveaways in 455 minutes … Jr C Brad Mears is coming off his most productive back-to-back games as a Seawolf, tallying 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the road sweep of WOU and SMU … a former Snow College teammate of Stafford's, Mears tied his career-high for the third time with 7 rebounds against SMU, while setting the pick for McGill on the eventual game-winning basket with 1 minute remaining.
