ANCHORAGE (Jan. 8) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team got 23 points apiece from guards Brandon Walker and Kenny Barker but it wasn’t enough to keep the undermanned Seawolves from dropping their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener, 90-78, to visiting Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night.

 

Guard Louie Beech led the sharp-shooting Crusaders (9-2, 1-0 GNAC) with 20 points, while forward Kendall Gielow was efficient inside with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

 

UAA (6-8, 0-1) – despite missing second-leading scorer Jeremiah Trueman (14.2 ppg) because of a sprained ankle – started the game strong, jumping to a 20-11 lead just eight minutes in.

 

The Crusaders then began their three-point barrage, however, finishing the first half with a 13-2 run that would put them ahead for good. NNU connected on 11 of 22 from long range, including 5 of 6 in the second half.

 

UAA fell behind by double digits, 52-40, with 14:09 remaining, and only once got within nine the rest of the way.

 

Barker nailed 3 of 5 treys and tallied four assists, four steals and six rebounds, while Walker was 7 of 14 from the field and 8 of 8 at the free-throw line. The 6-3 sophomore also led UAA with seven rebounds.

 

The Seawolves – the No. 4 free-throw shooting team in NCAA Div. II – finished 16 of 17 from the stripe.

 

Sophomore guards Kevin White and Lonnie Ridgeway chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, for UAA, which had its 10-game GNAC home winning streak snapped. The Seawolves had not lost a GNAC home contest since Feb. 2007 against former member Seattle University.

 

UAA returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when its hosts GNAC preseason favorite Central Washington (7-2, 1-0) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State men's basketball squad slipped three
spots Tuesday in the first national ranking of 2009, but remained in
the top 10 when the Jaguars landed at No. 10 in the sixth NABC poll of
the regular season.

With the ranking, ASU has now appeared in the top 10 of the national
poll for a school-record 10 consecutive weeks, dating back to last
season, and has been ranked among the top 25 for a school-record 26
consecutive weeks, dating back to the 2006-07 campaign.

The Jags are coming off arguably the biggest regular-season win in
school history on Monday, Jan. 5. ASU knocked off previously
second-ranked USC Aiken 87-76 in Christenberry Fieldhouse behind a
career-high 33 points from junior guard Ben Madgen.

The victory over the Pacers, which did not factor into this week's poll
voting, marked the highest-ranked opponent the Jags have ever defeated.
Previously, the highest-ranked opponent ASU had beaten was No. 4 Alaska
Anchorage in the semifinals of the Elite Eight last March in
Springfield, Mass.

ASU earned the highest ranking in school history on Tuesday, Dec. 9
when the Jags moved up to No. 3 in the nation.

Losses by six of the top 11 teams from the last poll of 2008 caused a
significant shakeup. Findlay retained its No. 1 ranking into the New
Year, but the rest of the top five has a new look.

The next poll will be released Jan. 13.

In front of a crowd of 3,109 – the second-largest in CFH history -- ASU
defeated the highest-ranked opponent in school history and improved to
14-5 vs. nationally-ranked opponents in its five seasons under head
coach Dip Metress. The contest – the 50th meeting between the two
rivals -- marked the first top-10 matchup between conference schools in
league history.

The win lifted ASU to 8-2 overall, to 2-1 in the PBC and to 34-16
all-time vs. the Pacers. USCA dropped to 7-3 overall and to 2-1 in the
league and suffered its third loss in four games after the opening the
season with six straight wins.

The Jags bounced back from a sub-par shooting effort at Clayton State
with one of its best of the season. ASU shot 60.0 percent for the game,
including 66.7 percent in the second half, and limited the Pacers to
just 36.4 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes.

Junior forward Fred Brathwaite posted a career-best effort as well,
tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the
season. Senior center Garret Siler netted 10 points, five rebounds and
a season-high five blocks.

Pacer junior guard Javonte Clanton booked 24 points, while Cordaryl
Ballard registered 16 points and four assists. Senior All-American
Chris Commons finished with 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting.

ASU jumped out to a 20-9 lead and led by as many as 13 after a pair of
Siler free throws at the 6:48 mark of the first half. The Pacers got as
close as six on a Seth Leonard layup with 1:22 remaining before the
Jags got free throws from Jason Killeen and Ben Madgen just before the
half.

A Madgen 3-pointer four minutes into the second half put ASU ahead
54-39. The Jags maintained a double-digit edge until the Pacers strung
together a 9-0 spurt over a stretch of 3:06, closing to within 65-60 on
a trey from Clanton with 7:19 remaining.

ASU answered with seven straight points, including a trey from senior
point guard Steve Smith, and pushed its advantage back to 72-60 on a
pair of Brathwaite free throws with 5:26 to go.

The Pacers never got closer than nine the rest of the way, and two
Madgen free throws gave the Jags their largest lead of the game at
84-68 with 1:36 left.

ASU hosts UNC Pembroke in the middle game of a three-game homestand on
Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

When Augusta State coach Dip Metress recruited Greg Hire, he did so
with one main purpose.

Defend Chris Commons.

So a chess match that began last spring finally played out Monday night
in front of 3,109 fans -- the second-largest crowd in Augusta State
history.

In this game, it was checkmate for the Jaguars.

Hire did his part, while fellow Aussie Ben Madgen stole the show in the
seventh-ranked Jaguars' 87-76 win over No. 2 USC Aiken.

Madgen posted a career-high 33 points in the first top-10 matchup in
the series, which dates back to the 1975-76 season. Augusta State (8-2,
2-1) also won the first top-10 contest between two Peach Belt
Conference teams.

"I'm very pleased," said Metress, who improved to 14-5 against
nationally ranked opponents. "We kept our composure. We played well. We
had a couple of bad stretches, but for the most part we played our
style of game."

With the victory, Augusta State defeated its highest-ranked opponent.
The Jaguars went 3-1 in an eight-day stretch, which featured three
top-25 opponents. More importantly, Augusta State improved to 2-1 in
conference play to match USC Aiken (7-3, 2-1) in the league standings.

"This is huge for us," Madgen said. "This gets us right back on track
after that loss at Clayton."

With standout senior center Garret Siler in foul trouble all night,
Madgen stepped up his game. He shot 11-for-14 from the field with four
3-pointers.

"Greg and Fred (Brathwaite) penetrated really well and got me some open
looks on the wing, which really helped," Madgen said. "That helped my
confidence and got me going."

With Madgen in gear, Hire helped contain Commons, who entered as the
Peach Belt's leading scorer. The All-American senior forward got in
foul trouble in the second half and finished with 15 points -- five
below his average -- on 7-for-16 shooting.

This is what Metress expected when he brought in Hire for a recruiting
visit after last season. He stressed to Hire the importance of the
rivalry and the fact he'd be facing one of the best players in Division
II.

"When you have a player of Commons' magnitude, you have to address it
in the off-season," Metress said. "We knew Commons was a bear. Greg did
a good job on him."

USC Aiken lost for the third time in four games. The Pacers played
without 6-foot-8 junior forward Josh Dollard, the team's leading
rebounder and second-leading scorer. He was indefinitely suspended for
violating athletic department policy before Saturday's game against
North Georgia.

"Without him, a marquee player is not here," Metress said. "He'll be
back."

Javonte Clanton posted a season-high 24 points to lead USC Aiken.
Cordaryl Ballard added 16.

The Pacers shot 42 percent from the field, including a 5-for-19 effort
from the perimeter.

Commons missed his first two shots, then started crafting his game. He
scored from the baseline on a hook. He added a reverse layup. He canned
a 17-foot jumper. He scored 12 first-half points.

"Good players make those shots," Hire said. "You just have to accept
that and you can't leave your head down."

Augusta State led 43-35 at halftime and pushed its lead to as many as
15 points. Siler picked up his fourth foul with 12:37 remaining. But
USC Aiken also suffered a major blow when Commons was charged with his
fourth foul 13 seconds later.

Siler, who fouled out in the final minute, finished with 10 points
(4-for-4 shooting) in 23 minutes.

"We understand he's going to get in foul trouble at times," Brathwaite
said. "When he gets in foul trouble, we have to come out like we did
tonight against every team we play. We can't have any letdowns when he
comes out. Everybody has to do their part and play."

Brathwaite posted a career-high 19 points with 10 rebounds -- his first
double-double of the season. Steve Smith added nine points, while Hire
chipped in with eight as Augusta State shot 60 percent from the field.

"We came in with the gameplan of containing Siler," Commons said, "and
we let other guys go off."

USC Aiken went on a 9-0 run to pull within 65-60 with seven minutes
remaining. Hire responded with two free throws. Then, Siler returned to
the game.

With its big man back on the floor, Augusta State switched from a zone
back to man-to-man defense. After Smith's 3-pointer, Siler blocked a
Kingsley Oguchi shot in the lane.

On the offensive end, Siler tossed a pass to Hire cutting through the
lane. Hire dished back out to Madgen for an open 3. Augusta State led
75-63 with 4:38 remaining and was not threatened down the stretch.

There's little time for the Jaguars to celebrate their win or for the
Pacers to get down. Both teams return to action Wednesday. Augusta
State plays host to UNC Pembroke. USC Aiken plays host to Francis
Marion.

"We've got to play hard," Commons said. "We have to get our mental
(focus) back. We have a lack of focus."

The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team (6-7) puts its 3-game winning streak on the line Thursday when it opens defense of its Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown against Northwest Nazarene. ANCHORAGE (Jan. 3) – Brandon Walker had 23 points and 17 rebounds and fellow sophomore Lonnie Ridgeway scored a career-high 22 points Saturday as Alaska Anchorage earned a 90-55 victory over Lincoln Christian at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

 

Senior center Jeremiah Trueman tallied 20 points for the Seawolves (6-7), who won their third straight and notched a season-high point total.

 

The Preachers (3-9), of Lincoln, Ill., were led by 14 points from reserve guard Ben Paulsen.

 

Powered by 16 points from Ridgeway, UAA jumped to an early lead against LCC for the second straight night and took a 53-25 halftime advantage. Things never got closer in the second stanza as senior guard Kenny Barker scored eight of his 12 points after the break.

 

Junior guard Darren Nye had six points and six assists for UAA, while freshman guard Steve White finished with six points and four assists.

 

UAA shot an impressive 55 percent from the floor, led by Trueman (10 of 14), Ridgeway (9 of 13) and Walker (9 of 17).

 

Ridgeway topped his previous career-high of 14 points and dished a personal-best five assists as well.

 

Meanwhile, Walker became the 20^th player in program history to reach 15 rebounds in a game and the first since Carl Arts had 16 in the 2007 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout against Texas Tech.

 

The Seawolves return to action Thursday, Jan. 8, when they host Northwest Nazarene (7 p.m. AST) to begin defense of their Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown.
