MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 18) – Casey Robinson exploded for a career-high 30 points to lead the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a critical 90-81 road victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building here Thursday.

 

The Seawolves (15-7, 6-5 GNAC) – ranked No. 9 in the current NCAA Div. II West Region poll – also got 14 points apiece from Drew Robinson and Brandon Walker as they posted a season-high scoring total.

                                                          

Sophomore guard Blair Wheadon led the Wolves (11-12, 4-8) with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, plus five assists, but the home team couldn’t overcome a 39-32 rebounding disadvantage.

 

UAA – which trailed throughout its 76-65 home loss to WOU last month – turned the tables Thursday, using an early three-point barrage to earn a 19-6 lead. The Wolves sliced their deficit to just 35-34 with under five minutes in the half before the Seawolves stretched to 49-41 at the break, getting a trey from Casey Robinson at the buzzer.

 

The Seawolf lead grew to 76-58 with 9 minutes to play as Casey Robinson converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and UAA would clinch the game from the charity stripe.

 

Robinson finished with 10-of-17 shooting, including 6 of 13 on treys, while making all four of his free throws. The junior forward from Manila, Utah, became the first Seawolf to reach the 30-point mark since Kenny Barker had 38 in a Jan. 31, 2009 win over Alaska Fairbanks.

 

Kevin White also reached double figures with 12 points and matched his career-high with eight rebounds, while Walker had a fantastic all-around stat line with 14 points, seven rebounds, a career-high-tying six assists and just one turnover in 34 minutes.

 

The Seawolves stay on the road for a Saturday (6:30 p.m. AST) showdown at Saint Martin’s in Lacey, Wash. That game can be heard locally on FM-93.7 KAFC or seen over the internet at pennatlantic.com.

UAA women 4th, men 9th in West Region polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 17) – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team retained its No. 4 West Region ranking, while the Seawolf men dropped to No. 9 in the latest NCAA Division II regional polls, released Wednesday.

 

The Seawolf women (18-3 overall, 16-3 vs Div. II) stayed fourth as the top four teams remained the same for the second straight week. UAA has won four straight games, including last Thursday against regionally 2^nd-ranked Western Washington.

 

UAA’s men (14-7, 9-5) dropped from eighth to ninth in this week’s poll after splitting two games last week, putting the Seawolves on the outside of the playoff bubble with three weeks remaining in the regular season.

 

The Seawolf women are No. 14 in this week’s national poll, but only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be two more regional polls until the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 7.

 

Both teams return to action in Monmouth, Ore., on Thursday for a doubleheader (women at 4:15 p.m., men at 6:30 p.m. AST) against Western Oregon.

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 13) – Brandon Walker scored a game-high 20 points but the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team found its offense too late Saturday, dropping a 62-57 decision against Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

 

UAA (14-7, 5-5 GNAC) also got 11 points and six rebounds from junior forward Casey Robinson in the battle between teams ranked in the NCAA Div. II West Region’s top 10.

 

CWU (14-7, 8-3) was led by 19 points from guard JC Cook and the visitors from Ellensburg, Wash., used an impressive 15 offensive rebounds to fend off UAA’s late comeback attempt.

 

Coming off a 68-53 upset of regionally top-ranked Western Washington on Thursday, the Seawolves (No. 8 regionally) came out cold, missing 15 of their first 19 shots and trailing 20-12 after more than 16 minutes.

 

The Seawolves used a late run to slice their halftime deficit to 24-20, but they could never take the lead against the regionally 10^th-ranked Wildcats in the second half.

 

After two free throws by Walker made it 39-36 at the 9-minute mark, the Wildcats answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Cook and reserve forward Shane Miller, eventually stretching to a 53-40 lead with 4:34 left.

 

Several missed free throws opened the door for a late Seawolf rally, however, and UAA got the ball back with 16 seconds left and trailing 58-55. But UAA point guard Steve White – who had just scored four points on the two previous possessions – was called for traveling with 10 seconds to play, and the Wildcats sealed it with six straight charities.

 

Walker shot 6 of 14 from the field and 8 of 11 at the free-throw line, while Robinson was 3 of 5 from long range. The Seawolves were outrebounded 33-24 overall.

 

The game marked the fewest points for CWU in a winning effort since 2002 and earned the Wildcats a split of the season series.

 

UAA returns to action next week with a pair of road games – Thursday, Feb. 18 at Western Oregon and Saturday, Feb. 20 at Saint Martin’s.
