UAA's Thompson earns Academic All-District honors

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 5) – Alaska Anchorage’s Travis Thompson was named Thursday to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Men’s Basketball Team, recognizing  the senior as one of the top five student-athletes among the 36 schools of the NCAA Division II West Region.

The 6-1 guard from Anchorage’s Dimond High School was honored for his 3.47 overall grade-point average as a civil engineering major, plus his outstanding play on the court for the Seawolves. This marks the third straight year a Seawolf has achieved the academic all-region award, following Liam Gibcus in 2013 and Teancum Stafford in 2014.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Thompson leads the Seawolves (12-9, 8-3 GNAC) and ranks sixth in the league with 16.5 points per game, while his 3.1 three-pointers per game lead the league and rank nationally. Already the Seawolves’ career three-point leader with 278, he is on pace to break the GNAC record and finish among the league’s all-time top 15 scorers.

The Capital One all-district teams are voted on by sports information directors throughout the NCAA’s eight geographical districts, with the Div. II West Region comprised of three leagues – the GNAC, the Pacific West Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Thompson and the other academic all-district honorees now advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

BURNABY, British Columbia (Jan. 31) -- All-conference guards Travis Thompson and Brian McGill combined for 59 points and 15 assists Saturday to pace Alaska Anchorage to a 115-98 men's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (12-9, 8-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got career-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds from senior guard Derrick Fain as they won their third straight and stayed unbeaten in 13 all-time meetings against SFU.

The Clan (7-11, 3-8) were led by 24 points and five assists from guard Sango Niang as they were outshot 60.3 percent to 49.3 percent by the Seawolves.

UAA led just 30-29 with nine minutes left in the first half before taking control. A 9-0 run gave UAA a 49-35 lead and Christian Leckband made it 62-43 right before halftime with one of his two three-pointers.

The Seawolves scored the first eight points after the break and Thompson drained a three-pointer to give UAA its largest lead at 75-45 with 17:24 on the clock.

Thompson finished with 30 points on 7-of-10 three-point shooting and dished six assists on a night when he surpassed 1,500 career points. It marked the seventh career 30-point outing for the Dimond High product, joining Jesse Jackson, Jason Kaiser and Jeff Martin as they only Seawolves to reach the mark that many times.

Meanwhile, McGill scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half, finishing with 10-of-13 shooting and nine assists. Fain tallied his career scoring high for the second game in a row on the strength of 7-of-14 shooting (5-9 3FG), recording his first double-double in the process.

Junior guard Dom Hunter added 12 points and sophomore forward Travis Parrish dished a career-high four assists to help UAA equal the No. 20 scoring total in program history.

UAA shot 20 of 32 (.625) from long range to match the third-most threes made by a Seawolf team.

The Seawolves return home for their next three games, starting with a Feb. 7 showdown against in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks. That game tips at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.

NOTES: McGill scored over 25 points for the seventh time in his career … Thompson now has 1,526 career points to pull within 18 of former All-American Carl Arts (1,544, 2004-08) for No. 4 on UAA's all-time list … Fain – a one-year transfer from The Master's College –surpassed the 19 points he scored in Thursday's victory at Western Washington and the eight rebounds he had in the season-opener against Concordia.
