UAA's Fain shares GNAC weekly award

PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 2) – Coming off his best two games as a Seawolf, Alaska Anchorage senior Derrick Fain was recognized Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s co-Player of the Week for men’s basketball.

The 6-4 guard, a one-year transfer from The Master’s College, totaled 42 points and 15 rebounds as UAA improved to 5-2 in GNAC road games with wins at Western Washington on Jan. 29 and at Simon Fraser on Jan. 31.

In the 81-76 win at WWU – UAA’s first in Bellingham since 2009 – Fain scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting (4-6 3FGs), along with five rebounds and two assists. Two nights later in Canada, he topped his scoring high with 23 points (7-14 FG, 5-9 3FG, 4-4 FT) and secured his first double-double with 10 rebounds in a 115-98 victory over the Clan.

Fain joins junior guard Brian McGill (Dec. 30-Jan. 4) as the second Seawolf to earn GNAC weekly honors this year, sharing this week’s award with Western Oregon’s Andy Avgi.

The Seawolves (12-9, 8-3 GNAC) – currently tied for second place with Seattle Pacific – play five of their final seven regular-season games at home, beginning Saturday when they host Alaska Fairbanks at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.
