Seawolves announce 2010-11 hoops schedules

ANCHORAGE (July 9) – The University of Alaska Anchorage announced Friday its men’s and women’s basketball schedules for the 2010-11 campaign.

The Seawolf men are slated for a minimum of 15 home contests, while the women will host at least 17 games. Both squads could play extra home games if they earn home-court advantage for the inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournaments, scheduled for Feb. 28-Mar. 5.

After the women begin with a pair of Division I exhibition contests at Indiana (Nov. 2) and Toledo (Nov. 4), both teams will play at the prestigious Disney’s West Coast Tip-Off Classic, Nov. 12-14. The women will take on West Region rivals UC San Diego and Grand Canyon, along with Texas Woman’s, on their trip to Anaheim, while the men will face Dixie State, UC San Diego and Lewis.

The women make their home debut with a pair of games against New Mexico Highlands, Nov. 19-20 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, before defending their Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title Nov. 23-24 at Sullivan Arena. The four-time defending champion Seawolves host San Jose State in the first round and play either Kent State or Washington the following day.

Meanwhile, the men will make their home debut against Weber State in the Shootout on Nov. 25 at Sullivan. Houston Baptist or Pac-10 foe Arizona State loom as second-round Shootout opponents, followed by a final-day matchup with Southern Utah, Drake, Ball State or St. John’s.

After playing a pair of Division II opponents at the Glacier Classic in Fairbanks, Dec. 3-4, the men wrap up their non-conference schedule with the AT&T Jamboree, Dec. 17-19 at the WFSC, where they will host Walla Walla and Florida Tech.

The women will play an early GNAC game Dec. 4 at Alaska Fairbanks before returning home to host Minot State and Dixie State in the AT&T Classic at the WFSC. A pair of West Region games against Chaminade, Dec. 17-18, concludes the women’s non-league slate.

The men begin their 18-game GNAC schedule Dec. 30 with a trip to Central Washington and play their league home opener Jan. 5 against longtime rival Montana State Billings. The women make their GNAC home debut on Jan. 6 against Northwest Nazarene.

Both home contests against arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks are slated for the final week of the regular season, with the men playing on Feb. 23 and the women on Feb. 24.

Should either or both teams finish in the top four of the league standings, they would host first-round GNAC Tournament contests on Feb. 28. The GNAC tourney semifinals and finals are scheduled for Mar. 2 and Mar. 5, respectively, with all games slated to be hosted by the higher-seeded teams on campus sites.

The NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships are to be played Mar. 11-14 at a site to be determined.
