UAA women 4th, men 7th in regional polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 16) – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team remained No. 4 in the latest Division II regional rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA, while the Seawolf men dropped to No. 7.

 

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds four of the top 10 places in the men’s rankings with No. 1 Central Washington, No. 6 Seattle Pacific, No. 7 UAA and No. 10 Western Washington. The Seawolves (18-7 overall, 13-6 vs. D-II) fell from fourth to seventh place after splitting home games against WWU (106-102 loss) and Simon Fraser (99-81 win) last week. The top three positions stayed the same, while Dixie State (4th), Chaminade (5th) and SPU (6th) moved ahead of UAA.

 

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds three of the top nine places, with No. 2 Western Washington, No. 4 UAA (21-5, 20-4) and No. 9 Seattle Pacific. The top four places in the women’s poll remained the same, while early-season Seawolf opponent UC San Diego moved into the rankings for the first time at No. 10.

 

Only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be two more regional polls before the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 6.

 

Both Seawolf teams are on the road this week, with the men facing Saint Martin’s on Thursday and Western Oregon on Saturday. The women, ranked No. 14 nationally, play No. 6 Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday.
