UAA’s Barker is unanimous All-GNAC pick

SPOKANE, Wash. – Alaska Anchorage senior Kenny Barker and Jeremiah Trueman were honored Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its 2008-09 Men’s Basketball All-Conference teams. Barker was the only unanimous pick among on the First Team selections, while Trueman received honorable mention in voting by the league’s nine head coaches.

Barker, a 6-3 guard from San Diego, Calif. (Claremont HS), ranked among the GNAC’s top 10 in seven different statistical categories, and was the only player to do so in scoring (18.7 ppg, 4th), rebounding (6.3 rpg, 9th) and assists (4.2 apg, 5th). In league games only, he ranked second in scoring (20.4 ppg) and dished 4.9 assists per game.

A former second-team all-league selection when he played for Alaska Fairbanks in 2006-07, the transfer finished in the GNAC’s career top 20 in 13 different categories, including No. 14 in scoring (1,501 pts) and rebounds (589), and No. 13 in assists (341).

In his lone season at UAA, Barker reached the 20-point mark in 15 games, including a GNAC-season-high 38 points in a home victory over UAF. That outing on Jan. 31 also tied him for No. 8 on UAA’s single-game scoring list and was the most ever for a Seawolf against the Nanooks.

In November, Barker made the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team, leading UAA to a victory over Division I program Louisiana Tech with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Trueman, a 6-9 center, was named honorable mention after ranking in the league’s top 10 in scoring (15.8 ppg, 9th), free-throw percentage (.870, 3rd), field-goal percentage (.597, 5th) and blocks (0.96 bpg, 7th). The Stratford, New Zealand, native ranked among the top 25 in the Division II national stats in both shooting-percentage categories, and he finished his 2-year career No. 2 on UAA’s field-goal percentage list at .603.

Trueman finished the season with 12 straight double-digit scoring efforts and averaged 22.2 ppg in his last five contests.

League champion Western Washington garnered most of the major individual honors, including Player-of-the-Year Ira Graham, Coach-of-the-Year Brad Jackson, and Newcomer-of-the-Year Morris Anderson.
