UAA's Walker named GNAC co-POW

SPOKANE, Wash. (Feb. 21) – Alaska Anchorage’s Brandon Walker was named Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s co-Player of the Week for men’s basketball.

A 6-3 senior from Hayward, Calif., Walker exploded for a career-high 40 points in Saturday’s 88-83 road victory over Western Oregon, helping the regionally 7th-ranked Seawolves stay in contention for an NCAA playoff bid and clinch a top-4 spot in the GNAC standings. It was the sixth 40-point effort in program history and the first since 2002.

In two games, he had team highs of 47 points and 18 rebounds and shot 53.1 percent from the floor (17 of 32) and 64.7 percent from the arc (11 of 17). Walker helped rally UAA from a nine-point second-half deficit against WOU, doing most of his damage from beyond the arc, hitting 10 of 15 three-pointers and 14 of 22 overall.

The 10 treys tied the GNAC record set by Issac Gildea of Humboldt State in 2002 and equaled by Derrick Webb of Western Washington last season and broke the UAA record of nine, accomplished four times by two different players. Walker also had 10 rebounds in the victory to record his second double-double of the season.

It is the first career player-of-the-week honor for Walker, who shared the honor with Northwest Nazarene’s Darious Walker.

Brandon Walker enters the final weekend of the season No. 11 on UAA’s all-time scoring list with 1,123 points, needing just 13 more points to move into the top 10. The Seawolves play Tuesday at Alaska Fairbanks and return to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex against the Nanooks on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.) in a Fox Sports Northwest regional broadcast.
