SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Western Oregon is fighting to stop a three-game losing skid, which is coming on the heels of a six-game win streak … excluding games against non-Div. II opponents, the Wolves have played nine straight games decided by eight points or less, including a pair of double-OT contests … the Wolves are led by Rodney Webster (15.6 ppg, 3.0 apg, .487 FG, .796 FT) and Marwan Sarhan (14.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, .612 FG) … Saint Martin's earned a 79-73 road upset of WOU last week, getting 19 points and 7 rebounds from Ryan Rogers in the victory … the Saints, who started the season 0-5, are led by Rogers (15.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg, .373 3FG) and Evan Coulter (14.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.6 apg, .475 3FG)

HOME SPLIT: The Seawolves earned a split of their high-scoring home series last week, coming back for a 92-83 win over Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 16 and suffering a 95-88 setback to Central Washington two nights later … against the Crusaders, Jr. G Travis Thompson scored his career-high against a fellow Div. II opponents, notching 34 points (8-21 FG, 4-11 3FG, 14-17 FT), along with 6 assists, 0 turnovers and 2 steals in 40 minutes … Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford was also big in the win with 13 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and 4 assists … So. PG Brian McGill added 17 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds to help UAA overcome a 16-point, first-half deficit … against CWU, Thompson and McGill combined for 42 points, but the Seawolves could not get the big defensive stops as the Wildcats shot 60 percent from the field … Stafford added his second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while reserve G/F Colton Lauwers chipped in 12 points (7-9 FT).

 

TEAM NOTES: With 185 victories, UAA head coach Rusty Osborne is on the verge of tying the all-time coaching victories record in Seawolf men's basketball program history … Osborne's former mentor and predecessor, Charlie Bruns, holds the record with 186 wins from 1991-2004 … UAA continues to lead the nation with a 2.09 assist-turnover ratio, along with top-25 Div. II ranks in FT% (3rd, .805), 3FGs per game (3rd, 12.7), fewest turnovers (2nd, 8.6 tpg), assists (13th, 18.0 apg), scoring offense (10th, 89.4 ppg) and turnover margin (24th, +4.8) … in the GNAC stats, the Seawolves lead in scoring offense, scoring margin (+12.2), FT%, 3FGs per game, assists and asst-TO ratio … UAA is chasing its ninth straight winning season and the 31st in the program's 37 years … the Seawolves have also finished with a plus-.500 league record 25 times in 31 years of conference membership.

 

PLAYER NOTES: Jr. G Travis Thompson ranks No. 2 in the GNAC and 22nd nationally with 21.7 points per game, along with top-20 national marks in 3FGs per game (12th, 3.4), and FT% (16th, .895) … Thompson leads the GNAC in 3FGs per game, along with ranks of 2nd in FT%, 2nd in minutes played (34.8 mpg), 11th in steals (1.3 spg), 11th in assist-turnover ratio (2.0), 14th in assists (2.8 apg) and 15th in 3FG% (.406) … coming off a redshirt season, the local Dimond HS product has tallied double figures in 17 of 18 games thus far, including four times reaching the 30-point plateau … Thompson was named Most Outstanding Player of the Nov. 15-16 AT&T Jamboree and made the all-tourney team at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout … a 2nd-Team All-GNAC pick in 2011-12 and a preseason all-league selection this year, Thompson currently ranks among UAA's career top 20 in FT% (4th, .867), 3FGs made (5th, 174), 3FG% (6th, .439), along with No. 23 on the all-time scoring list (948) … Sr. G Kyle Fossman was a First Team All-GNAC pick and joined Thompson as a preseason All-GNAC designee … the Haines product has scored double figures in 11 of 12 games, scoring 20-plus on four occasions ... UAA's 2012-13 team MVP ranks 9th in the GNAC scoring race with 15.8 ppg, boosted by a career-high-tying 28 points in UAA's Shootout loss to Div. I Indiana State … in the NCAA national stats, the team's only 4th-year senior is 8th in 3FGs per game (3.72) and 11th in assist-TO ratio (3.28) … Fossman has risen to 3rd place on UAA's career 3FGs list at 206, meaning he would need to average 3.4 per game to break the Mark Drake's career record (243, 2001-05) during the regular season … Fossman's other Seawolf career ranks include 5th in 3FG% (.448), 7th in FT% (.854) and 18th in points (1,010), having surpassed the 1,000-point mark in UAA's victory over Northwest Nazarene last week … another preseason all-league pick and returning All-GNAC 2nd Team selection, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford sits 15th in the early GNAC scoring race with 13.9 ppg, boosted by a career-high 29 points in the 83-72 victory over No. 5 Minnesota State … Stafford is also 3rd in rebounding (8.5 rpg), 9th in 3FGs per game (2.2) and 11th in blocks (0.7 bps) … since transferring from Snow (Utah) College last year, the Auburn, Wash., native has scored double figures in 36 of 42 appearances, including a current string of seven games … Stafford posted his first back-to-back double-doubles with last week's showings against NNU and CWU, raising his career total to five; he is one of just three GNAC players with at least four double-doubles this season … So. PG Brian McGill he made a enormous impact in his first year of eligibility since transferring from Western Oregon … after setting the GNAC and UAA single-game record with 20 assists on Dec. 16, McGill ranks No. 2 in the league with 6.2 apg, along with other GNAC ranks of 4th in scoring (18.1 ppg), 4th in asst-TO ratio (2.6), 5th in minutes (33.0 mpg), 8th in FT% (.833) and 14th in FG% (.505) … the Clackamas, Ore., native was named the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week following his 29-point, 10-assist performance in the league-opening victory over UAF, becoming just the fifth player in 14 years to tally at least 25 points and 10 assists in a GNAC game … Sr. G/F Colton Lauwers has been UAA's lunch-pail man, spelling McGill at the point and banging for rebounds at the power forward position … a former Dimond HS teammate of Thompson's, Lauwers lead the GNAC in assist-turnover ratio with 41 assists and just 12 giveaways (3.4) in 424 minutes … he is also 20th in FT% (.761), 21st in assists (2.3 apg), and 23rd in rebounding (4.3 rpg) in the GNAC … Jr. G Boomer Blossom scored a career-high 8 points in UAA's loss to Central Washington, going a perfect 3 of 3 from the field (2-2 on 3FGs) … the former Soldotna HS star has seen action in every game since returning from an early season back injury in late November.
