LACEY, Wash. (Jan. 2) – Suki Wiggs had 32 points and eight rebounds and fellow junior Corey Hammell posted another big double-double Saturday to pace the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to its fifth straight victory, 91-74 over Saint Martin’s at Marcus Pavilion.
Hammell finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks and two steals as the Seawolves (11-4, 4-0 GNAC) remained tie for the early lead atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.
The Saints (7-5, 1-3) were led by 13 points and six assists from guard Cole Preston but could not forge a comeback despite a strong surge midway through the contest.
UAA jumped ahead early as junior wing Spencer Svejcar connected on his first three three-pointers to establish a 33-22 cushion. Wiggs made it 38-22 with a pair of free throws, but the Saints closed the half with a 7-0 run. The hosts took their momentum into the second half, getting a pair of treys from guard Tyler Copp and a dunk by center Fred Jorg to draw within 42-39 at the 17:12 mark.
However Seawolf guard Diante Mitchell answered with a short jumper, and Hammell snagged a steal and converted an offensive rebound to reestablish control, starting 13-2 surge over the next three and a half minutes.
Jorg drew the Saints within 57-51 on a layup at the 9:25 mark before UAA responded with the next seven points, capped by Mitchell’s three-pointer.
Mitchell and fellow guard Brian McGill scored 12 points apiece, while Svejcar chipped in 13 points on 4-of-7 three-point accuracy.
Wiggs – a transfer from Div. I Idaho – extended his UAA record with a 15th consecutive 20-plus scoring effort. The Seattle O’Dea High School product shot 8 of 17 from the field (2-4 3FG) and 14 of 16 from the foul stripe, along with three assists and two steals. It was the fifth game with 25 or more and the third 30-plus performance for the GNAC’s leading scorer, raising his average to 24.1 ppg.
Meanwhile, Hammell posted his GNAC-leading ninth double-double and his third game with at least 15 points and 15 boards. The transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College grabbed six of his boards on the offensive end and converted 11 of 13 free throws, helping UAA shoot 33 of 39 (.846) as a team from the charity stripe.
UAA also outshot the Saints both overall (.490 to .365) and on three-pointers (10-of-21, .476 to 12-of-37, .324) and outrebounded them 45-33.
The win was the Seawolves’ fifth straight over the Saints and their third straight in Lacey.
