ANCHORAGE (June 23) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball program added another impact transfer on Tuesday as head coach Rusty Osborne announced that former University of Idaho guard Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs has signed a scholarship agreement to play for the Seawolves.
A 6-4, 185-pound guard, Wiggs averaged 10.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 61 career games with the Vandals, including 29 starting assignments last year. As a sophomore, he was his team’s third-leading scorer and second-leading distributor with 11.5 ppg and 81 total assists. Wiggs also made a team-bests 106 free throws, and his .455 field goal percentage was tops among perimeter players. Along with a career-high 22 points against Sacramento State, he had career-bests of seven assists, eight rebounds and three steals in 2014-15.
As a freshman, Wiggs averaged 9.9 ppg and shot .469 from the field, earning Western Athletic Conference Sixth-Man of the Year honors from CollegeHoopsDaily.com. He scored in double figures 17 times in his first season, including a stretch of 10 straight games in February and March.
“Suki is a dynamic player with the ability to play multiple positions well,” said Osborne, who has piloted the Seawolves to 10 straight winning seasons. “He can play both wings, as well as the point guard position, and his strength and athleticism will allow us to create mismatches for him. His ability to attack the basket will add another dimension to our offense and take pressure off our shooters. He also brings an enthusiasm and competitiveness that should bring a lot of excitement to the Alaska Airlines Center for the next two years.”
Following a successful career at traditional power O’Dea High School in Seattle, Wiggs spent one season at Kingdom Prep Academy in Columbus, Ga., where he helped his squad to the NACA Division III national title.
“Our staff is very excited about Suki and the rest of this year’s recruiting class,” Osborne added. “They bring talent, toughness, size and competitiveness to our program. In addition, their individual skills complement our returners, as well as each other. It was our goal to add experience and size at every position, and I believe we have accomplished that with this group.”
Wiggs becomes the sixth player to sign with the Seawolves for the upcoming campaign, joining fellow junior transfers Corey Hammell (6-6, 220, F, Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman HS/Santa Rosa JC), Diante Mitchell (6-1, 195, G, Syracuse, UT/Western Nebraska CC), Spencer Svejcar (6-3, 195, G , Arvada, CO/Ralston Valley HS/Laramie County CC) and Tayler Thompson (6-9, 220, F/C, Sonora, CA/Cuesta College), and true freshman Curtis Ryan (6-9, 6-9, 230, Warrnambool, Australia).
