Seawolves sign impact JC transfer Spencer Svejcar

ANCHORAGE (Apr. 23) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball men’s Rusty Osborne made a major addition to his team’s 2015-16 lineup Thursday, announcing that junior-college standout and former Colorado multi-sport prep star Spencer Svejcar has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

A 6-3, 190-pound guard/forward, Svejcar was a two-year starter at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming, where he earned NJCAA All-Region IX First Team honors as sophomore in 2014-15. The Arvada, Colo., native averaged 16.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season, shooting 47.3 percent from the field, 40.5 percent on three-pointers and 78.2 percent from the free throw line. He scored over 20 points on nine occasions, including a season-high 33 against Sheridan, to help LCCC to a 22-10 record and its second straight playoff berth.

“We are excited to add Spencer to our program,” said Osborne, who has led the Seawolves to 10 consecutive winning seasons. “He is an excellent all-around athlete and will bring more size and toughness to our backcourt. As a high-energy player, he will also help raise our level of intensity, and we think he has tremendous leadership ability.”

“I think UAA is getting a Division I-caliber player in Spencer,” said LCCC coach Jason Ficca. “I know they’re getting a great person and student who will make the basketball program better both on and off the court.”

Prior to junior college, Svejcar was one of the top multi-sport athletes in the state of Colorado, starring for Ralston Valley High School in football and basketball, and playing baseball through his sophomore year.

As a senior in 2012-13, he was the state of Colorado Defensive Player of the Year as a safety in football, the Jefferson County Male Athlete of the Year, and an honorable mention all-state selection in basketball. On the court, he was the eighth-leading scorer in Colorado for Class 5A, averaging numbers of 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 53 percent field goal shooting, and landing JeffCo League MVP honors. In football, his senior accolades included JeffCo North Metro Defensive MVP and Denver Post First Team All-State awards.

Svejcar also played AAU summer basketball for the Colorado Chaos in 2012 and 2013.

“After being highly decorated as a football player and a Div. I recruit, Spencer chose to dedicate himself full-time to basketball because of his love of the game,” Osborne added. “He has improved tremendously in all areas, and we feel he can continue that growth curve. Although a great shooter at 41 percent from three, he also possesses a 36-inch vertical jump and has the ability to attack the basket. He should help us defend some of the bigger wing players that we see throughout the season.”

Svejcar becomes the second member of the Seawolves’ 2015-16 recruiting class, joining incoming freshman center Curtis Ryan (6-9, 230, Warrnambool, Australia).
