Seven Seawolves make GNAC All-Academic hoops squads

 

PORTLAND, Ore. – Seven Alaska Anchorage players were among the 63 student-athletes honored Thursday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its All-Academic teams for men’s and women’s basketball.

The Seawolves accounted for three of the 19 men’s honorees, with junior Teancum Stafford posting the highest GPA at 4.00. Stafford, a CoSIDA/Capital One Second Team All-American, is a psychology major from Auburn, Wash., and was one of only three GNAC players to post a 3.8-plus GPA.

Stafford was joined by teammates Kyle Fossman and Travis Thompson among the honorees. Fossman, a senior from Haines, gained his third career GNAC All-Academic award with a 3.63 overall GPA in accounting, while Thompson, a junior from Anchorage (Dimond HS), received his second career award with a 3.44 GPA in civil engineering.

On the women’s side, senior forward Kylie Burns also earned her third career honor as the Kansas City, Kan., native holds a 3.29 overall GPA in dietetics. She was joined by sophomore teammates and first-time honorees Alyssa Hutchins (3.47, undeclared, Wasilla/WHS), Jenna Buchanan (3.45, English, Galena/GHS) and Jessica Madison (3.32, justice, Port Angeles, Wash.).

 

To be eligible for the all-academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least his or her second year of competition at a GNAC university.
