SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sophomore point guard Brian McGill had 18 points and four assists Monday as the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team lost its final exhibition of the 2013-14 preseason, falling 90-78 to The Master’s College at Bross Gymnasium.

UAA also got 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds from senior guard Colton Lauwers, while juniors Teancum Stafford and Brad Mears tallied eight points and five rebounds apiece.

The Master’s, an NAIA Div. I program, was led by a game-high 30 points from hot-shooting guard Derrick Fain, who canned 4 of 7 from long distance, along with five rebounds and four assists. Junior-college transfer Zach Stalin added 18 points and 10 rebounds on the interior for the Mustangs.

UAA led 12-11 after five minutes when Stafford threw down a fast-break dunk, but the hosts caught fire from long range at that point, using an 11-0 run to pull away. The Seawolves trailed 46-35 at halftime and could not manage to slice their deficit appreciably in the second half.

The Master’s earned the victory with 10-of-23 (.435) three-point shooting, compared to just 7-of-28 (.250) for UAA, while the Mustangs also controlled the boards, 43-37.

The Seawolves open the regular season Friday when they face fellow Div. II opponent Lindenwood (Mo.) at the CCA Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim.
