PROVO, Utah (Nov. 2) – Junior guard Travis Thompson scored a team-high 14 points as the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team premiered with a 99-68 exhibition loss to Division I Brigham Young in front of 9,032 fans the Marriott Center.
The Seawolves also got 11 points apiece from guards Colton Lauwers and Brian McGill, plus 10 points and four rebounds from senior guard Kyle Fossman, but the taller Cougars owned a commanding 69-29 advantage on the boards.
BYU, picked to finished second behind only Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference preseason poll, was led by 17 points and 14 rebounds from forward Erick Mika, plus 17 points and 11 rebounds from swingman Matt Carlino.
The Seawolves jumped to a quick lead, going up 10-4 on a short jumper by local product Brad Mears (South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS/Snow College) with 16:09 on the clock. But the Cougars quickly caught fire and took their first lead, 14-12, on a jumper by Carlino at the 13:39 mark. Lauwers kept UAA within 22-17 on a trey with 9:05 left before the Cougars answered with an 11-0 run to stretch their lead for good.
Thompson, a 6-1 guard who is coming off a redshirt season, shot 5 of 15 from the floor and added three assists. McGill, a transfer from Western Oregon who also redshirted in 2012-13, dished a team-high five assists for the Seawolves.
UAA – tabbed for second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason poll – completes its exhibition slate Monday at 6 p.m. AST when it travels to Santa Clarita, Calif., to face NAIA foe The Master’s College.
