INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 22) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team remained at No. 2 in the second version of the Division II West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.
With a 16-3 record against Division II competition, nationally 20th-ranked UAA trails only nationally 14th-ranked Western Washington (20-4) in the regional poll. In addition to WWU and UAA, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference is well represented with Seattle Pacific (20-5) at No. 3, Western Oregon (14-7) at No. 6 and Montana State Billings (12-8) at No. 10, just two spots out of playoff position.
California Collegiate Athletic Association co-leader Chico State (16-6) is No. 4, while Pacific West Conference leader Dixie State (19-4), WOU, Cal Poly Pomona (15-6) and Humboldt State (14-7) round out the teams that would be in the NCAA West Regional Tournament if it started today.
The regional rankings will be released for the final time the next Wednesday, Feb. 29, before the NCAA selection committee determines which five teams will join the GNAC (tournament), CCAA (tournament) and PacWest (regular season) champions in the Mar. 9-12 regional tournaments. The playoff field will be announced on Sunday, Mar. 4.
The Seawolves are back in action Thursday when they conclude the GNAC regular-season slate at Alaska Fairbanks (7 p.m.).
