Gibcus paces eight Seawolves on GNAC All-Academic hoops squads

SPOKANE, Wash. – Eight Alaska Anchorage players were among the 51 student-athletes honored Wednesday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its All-Academic teams for men’s and women’s basketball.

The Seawolf men led the 10-team conference and produced a program record with five academic all-league selections, while the UAA women put three players on the squad.

On the men’s side, UAA junior Liam Gibcus had the highest overall grade-point average on the American scale at 3.84, while Simon Fraser’s Zachary Frehlick posted a 4.15 GPA on the Canadian grading scale. It is the second year in a row that Gibcus, a civil engineering major from Lysterfield, Australia, has shared the high-GPA honor with Frehlick.

Seawolf seniors Steve White (3.48, physical education) and Phillip Hearn (3.34, civil engineering) also earned their second career GNAC academic awards, while sophomores guards Kyle Fossman (3.58, accounting) and Travis Thompson (3.35, engineering) were first-time honorees.

On the women’s side, senior Hanna Johansson was one of nine players to earn the award for a third straight year. The 6-2 center from Gothenburg, Sweden, owns a 3.66 GPA in journalism & public communications and was recently voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Team as well.

Junior forward and Kodiak native Alysa Horn (3.56, physical education) made the team for the second year in a row, while sophomore Kylie Burns (3.53, undeclared) earned the honor in her first year of eligibility.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least his or her second year of competition at a GNAC university.
