UAA No. 4 in both men's, women's regional polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 9) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s basketball teams are both ranked No. 4 the latest Division II regional rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

 

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds three of the top five places in the men’s rankings with No. 1 Central Washington, UAA and No. 5 Seattle Pacific. The Seawolves (17-6 overall, 12-5 vs. D-II) remained fourth despite a loss last week at SPU. None of the top five in men’s poll changed, although there was considerable shakeup among the bottom half as BYU-Hawaii slipped one position to seventh, Chaminade climbed two positions to eighth, Grand Canyon replaced Cal State L.A. at No. 9, and San Francisco State slid three spots to 10th.

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds two of the top four places, with Western Washington jumping from No. 4 to No. 2 and UAA (19-5, 18-4) moving up from No. 5 to No. 4 to this week. The Seawolves leapfrogged Dixie State, which fell from third to fifth. Cal Poly Pomona took over the top spot from Cal State Monterey Bay, which fell to third.

 

Only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be three more regional polls until the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 6.

 

Both Seawolf teams are at home this week, with the men facing Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday. The women, ranked No. 14 nationally, play Saint Martin’s on Thursday and Western Oregon on Saturday. Both doubleheaders begin at 5:15 p.m. with the women’s contests.
