UAA hoops squads hold steady in regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 2) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s basketball teams retained their respective slots in the latest Division II regional rankings Wednesday, with the men at No. 4 and the women at No. 5.

 

The Seawolf men (16-5 overall, 11-4 vs. D-II) remained fourth despite a loss last week to then-No. 2 Central Washington, which jumped over Cal State Dominguez Hills to lead this week’s poll. CWU, UAA and No. 5 Seattle Pacific give the Great Northwest Athletic Conference three of the top five spots in this week’s rankings.

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds three of the top eight spots, with Western Washington at No. 4, followed by UAA at No. 5 and Seattle Pacific at No. 8. SPU remained in playoff position despite losing 68-56 to the Seawolves last Thursday, while the rest of the poll remained virtually static.

 

Only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be four more regional polls until the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 6.

 

Both Seawolf teams are on the road for GNAC games this week, with the men facing a huge showdown against Seattle Pacific on Thursday (6 p.m. AST) and a tough test at Montana State Billings on Saturday (5:30 p.m. AST). The women, ranked No. 15 nationally, play at Central Washington on Thursday (6 p.m. AST) and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday (5 p.m. AST).
