ANCHORAGE (Jan. 5) – Senior Brandon Walker scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half Wednesday to help the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team pull away for its 10th straight victory, beating Montana State Billings 73-52 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

 

Junior center Taylor Rohde had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Seawolves (11-3, 3-0 GNAC), who stayed perfect in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

 

MSUB (3-9, 1-4) got 13 points apiece from guards Leon Sutton and Jaxon Myaer, who helped stake the visitors to a 26-22 lead with 2:17 remaining in the first half.

 

But Walker sank a jump shot and UAA point guard Drew Robinson picked Myaer’s pocket at midcourt with 10 seconds left in the half. Myaer was whistled for an intentional foul as Robinson began to streak in for a layup. Robinson made one of two free throws and then gave the Seawolves the lead, 28-26, with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

 

After the Yellowjackets regained the edge, 34-33, on a layup by Sutton at the 16:11 mark, the Seawolves took control with an 11-0 run over the next two minutes. Casey Robinson and Walker nailed back-to-back three-pointers to start the surge, and freshman Travis Thompson drained his only basket of the game with yet another bomb.

 

UAA finished 11 of 26 (.423) from long range, while MSUB hit just 4 of 14 (.286) treys. The Seawolves also outrebounded their longtime rivals, 36-20, in a game regionally broadcast on Fox Sports Northwest.

The Seawolves got a huge effort as well from junior guard Mario Gill, who scored eight of his 13 points in the early going, making 3 of 5 three-pointers and equaling his career-high with nine rebounds. The 6-2 junior from Portland, Ore., also dished a pair of assists.

 

Walker shot 8 of 14 from the field, including 4 of 9 from three-point land, to move into 20th place on UAA’s career scoring list with 934 points. Rohde was 4 of 7 from the field and perfect on eight free throws. Reserve point guard Steve White equaled his career-high six assists for the second time in three games, and Drew Robinson added five dishes.

 

UAA will try to equal the third-longest win streak in program history when it returns to the WFSC for a Saturday showdown against defending league champion Seattle Pacific. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. AST.
