Soldotna's Blossom joins Seawolf men

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 15) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball head coach Rusty Osborne announced Friday that Soldotna native Boomer Blossom has joined the team.

As a senior at Soldotna High, Blossom led the Stars to a berth in the ASAA Class 4A State Tournament, earning all-tourney honors with averages of 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. For the 2009-10 season, he averaged 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals per game, earning first-team All-Northern Lights Conference accolades. The 6-2, 180-pound guard will redshirt the 2010-11 campaign, Osborne said.

“We are excited to have Boomer as part of our program,” said Osborne, who begins his seventh season at the Seawolf helm with today’s first day of practice. “He accomplished great things as a high school player, especially considering that opposing defenses were keying on him. He is a quality young man and a good student as well.”

Blossom brings the total number of newcomers to nine for this year’s roster, joining fellow freshmen Kyle Fossman (6-1, 190, G, Haines [Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year]) and Travis Thompson (6-0, 175, G, Anchorage/Dimond HS), JC transfers Mario Gill (6-2, 190, G, Portland, Ore./Wilson HS/Eastern Arizona College), Jeremy Jones (6-7, 190, F, Gresham, Ore./Barlow HS/Mt. Hood CC), Matt Peterson (6-7, 265, C, Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower HS/Whatcom CC), Chris Plooy (6-5, 190, F, Anchorage/Dimond HS/Green River [Wash.] CC) and Chris Weitzel (6-7, 245, F/C, Gresham, Ore./Mt. Hood CC), and Division I transfer Taylor Rohde (6-9, 250, F, Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS/Arizona State).

The Seawolves will also be bolstered by the return of junior guards Lonnie Ridgeway and Phillip Hearn, who are back after taking one and two seasons, respectively, away from the program.
