Salt Lake transfer is first Seawolf hoops recruit for 09-10

ANCHORAGE (Apr. 28) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team added its first recruit for the 2009-10 season Tuesday as head coach Rusty Osborne announced the signing of Drew Robinson to a National Letter of Intent.

Robinson, a 6-1, 175-pound guard from Lehi, Utah, comes to UAA after playing two seasons at junior-college power Salt Lake Community College, where he helped the Bruins win the NJCAA Div. I national title last month.

In two seasons at SLCC, Robinson’s teams went a combined 63-10 with back-to-back Region 18 titles and trips to the NJCAA championship game. As a sophomore in 2008-09, he averaged 7.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists and better than a 2-to-1 assist-turnover ratio. He also shot .459 from the field, .403 (31-77) on three-pointers, and .841 (74-88) from the free throw line.

“Drew embodies all the qualities we look for in our program – high character, toughness, willingness to defend, and shooting ability. Above all, he is a winner,” said Osborne, who enters his sixth season at UAA this fall. “Drew’s last three seasons have all ended in championship games – his senior year of high school, and the last two NJCAA national championship games.

“He is a natural shooting guard who can play the point if needed. Playing in a post-oriented system, he still put up impressive shooting percentages. His versatility is going to be very valuable to us the next two years.”

“Drew was an invaluable guy for us who played starter minutes but didn’t start,” SLCC coach Norm Parrish told the Daily Herald last month. “He’s a team captain and glue guy and did well at both guard spots for us. He was our backup at the No. 1 and 2 positions, and finished a lot of games for us.”

Prior to SLCC, Robinson took a redshirt season at Division I program Southern Utah in 2004-05, and served a 2-year mission in the Philippines from 2005-07.

As a prep, he was a 3-year starter at Lehi High School, where he twice earned first-team all-state honors and led the Pioneers to the 2004 Class 3A state-title game.
