Seawolf men 10th in latest West Region rankings
INDIANAPOLIS (Mar. 2) – Coming off a split of its regular-season finales last week, the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team fell one spot to No. 10 in the latest version of the official NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, released Wednesday.
The Seawolves, 17-9 against D-II competition, are one of four Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams in the top 10, along with No. 1 Western Oregon (24-2), No. 4 Seattle Pacific (19-6) and No. 9 Alaska Fairbanks (18-7).
California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals Chico State (20-5) and UC San Diego (20-6) are ranked second and third, respectively.
UAA finds itself in competition with multiple clubs for potential NCAA berths, primarily with No. 8 Dixie State (18-8) and UAF.
The rankings take into account only games played through Feb. 28 and are based solely on a team’s results against Div. II competition.
The regional rankings will be released publicly for the final time on Mar. 2, prior to the GNAC, CCAA and Pac West tournaments. The three conference tournament champions and the five highest ranked teams will then be unveiled with the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Mar. 6 at 6:30 p.m. AST (ncaa.com).
UAA returns to action Thursday at 11 a.m. AST at the GNAC Tournament in Lacey, Wash., against Western Washington. Should the Seawolves prevail against the Vikings, they would earn a head-to-head game against UAF in Friday’s semifinal round.
