PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 8) – Alaska Anchorage senior Brian McGill has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men’s basketball after turning in back-to-back 30-plus scoring efforts in the Seawolves’ road sweep of Western Washington and Simon Fraser.
The 6-2 guard from Clackamas, Ore., totaled 65 points – shooting 18 of 33 (.545) from the field, 3 of 5 on three-pointers and 26 of 26 on free throws – along with seven steals and just two turnovers in 82 minutes.
In Thursday’s 108-105 double-overtime win at WWU, McGill had 31 points, two assists, three steals and no turnovers, with his 47 minutes tying for the fifth-most ever played by a Seawolf. He nailed 2 of 4 three-pointers against the Vikings and broke the UAA’s program’s old single-game free-throw percentage record for the second time in three weeks, making all 15 of his charities.
At Simon Fraser, he poured in a career-high 34 points on 11-of-15 shooting, making his only trey and all 11 of his free throws. He also matched his career-high four steals as the Seawolves moved into sole possession of second place with the victory.
This marks the third career GNAC Player of the Week honor for McGill, who joined teammates Suki Wiggs (Nov. 23-29) and Spencer Svejcar (Jan. 11-17) as fellow winners this season.
Currently in the midst of a stretch of four games in eight days, the Seawolves return to the court for a Tuesday (5 p.m. AST) road tilt at Montana State Billings. That game can be seen live online at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.
