ANCHORAGE (Feb. 18) – Senior guard Brian McGill had 19 points and nine assists and junior guard Suki Wiggs scored a game-high 22 points Thursday to power the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a 93-67 rout of Concordia at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (20-8, 13-4 GNAC) – ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Div. II West Region poll – also got 16 points and six rebounds from senior Christian Leckband, while junior Corey Hammell recorded his 12th double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Cavaliers (7-17, 5-12) were led by 12 points and five rebounds from Drew Martin, but the visitors from Portland were outshot 57 percent to 41 percent and outrebounded 40-26.
UAA took control from the start, getting 11 points from McGill in under five minutes to build a 16-6 edge. Hammell converted a pair of free throws to start a 9-0 run that made it 29-12, and the Seawolves led by double figures for the final 32 minutes.
With the win, the Seawolves retained their one-game lead over Alaska Fairbanks and extended to a two-game advantage over idle Seattle Pacific for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference race. The top two teams earn byes for into the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament, set for Mar. 3-5 in Lacey, Wash.
Seven of the eight Seawolves who attempted a shot connected at over 50 percent, with Wiggs shooting 9 of 15 and McGill 8 of 14. The .574 (35 of 61) team shooting was the best for UAA against a fellow D-II opponent this year, boosted by 12-of-23 accuracy from deep.
The Seawolves got more contributions up and down the lineup as Drew Peterson tallied nine points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting, freshman guard Damien Fulp had five points, three assists and no turnovers, and junior forward Travis Parrish had four points (2-2 FG), six rebounds and two assists.
UAA takes the Alaska Airlines Center floor for the final time this season when it hosts nationally top-ranked Western Oregon (22-3, 15-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The team’s two seniors – McGill and Leckband – will be honored in a ‘senior day’ ceremony prior to tip-off.
