ANCHORAGE (Dec. 3) – Junior forward Corey Hammell posted 19 points and 13 rebounds Thursday to power a balanced Alaska Anchorage effort in a 93-65 men’s basketball victory over Central Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (7-4, 1-0 GNAC) also got a game-high 21 points from junior guard Suki Wiggs as they used a big first-half run to claim the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
The Wildcats (4-1, 0-1) were led by 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks from senior center Joseph Stroud, but the visitors from Ellensburg could not capitalize on a fast start as they were outshot 51 percent to 37 percent and outrebounded 45-35.
UAA trailed 6-0 out of the gate and 17-13 with 14:20 left in the first half before taking control with a 10-0 run. Junior forward Tayler Thompson sparked the surge with a pair of layups, an assist, a steal and a block, helping the Cuesta (Calif.) College transfer finish with 10 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Central’s Chris-Michael Garrett cut his team’s deficit to 34-27 on a jumper at the 7:03 mark before the Seawolves got back-to-back baskets from Spencer Svejcar and Christian Leckband to take a double-digit lead for good.
Leckband converted a layup on a feed from Svejcar with 10 seconds left to make it 51-33 at the half, and the Wildcats never got closer in the final 20 minutes.
Leckband added 11 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3FG), 5 rebounds, 2 assists and no turnovers, while junior point guard Diante Mitchell had 17 points (6-8 FG, 3-4 3FG), six assists and two steals.
Hammell – whose six double-doubles have all come against fellow NCAA Div. II opponents – shot 4 of 7 from the field and made all 11 of his free throws to do his damage in just 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, Wiggs shot 8 of 17 from the floor and dished three assists as the Div. I transfer extended his streak to 11 straight 20-point performances to start his Seawolf career.
Svejcar finished with six points, three assists an no turnovers to help the Seawolves snap a two-game home losing skid against the Wildcats.
