California Juco standout Peterson joins UAA men's hoops

ANCHORAGE (Sept. 9) – Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne announced Wednesday that California Juco standout Drew Peterson has joined the Seawolves’ program for the 2015-16 campaign.

A 6-4, 200-pound guard/forward, Peterson was a two-time Pacific Coast Athletic Conference First Team selection and double-digit career scorer at San Diego Miramar College. As a sophomore in 2014-15, he averaged 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists for the Jets, netting a career-high of 32 points in a victory over Riverside.

Peterson also showed proficiency from the free throw line at Miramar – where he was selected his school’s 2014-15 Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year – shooting 86 percent from his career and twice posting 12-of-12 efforts.

“We are fortunate to add a player of Drew’s ability at this late date,” Osborne said. “He has good size and strength, and he turned down scholarships at our level in order to join our program. As a first-team all-conference player, he is not your typical ‘walk-on,’ but someone we feel will challenge for playing time over the next couple seasons.”

Peterson was a prep standout at San Diego’s St. Augustine High School prior to his JC career.

Peterson becomes the eighth newcomer on this year’s team, joining fellow junior transfers Corey Hammell (6-6, 220, F, Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman HS/Santa Rosa JC), Diante Mitchell (6-1, 195, G, Syracuse, UT/Western Nebraska CC), Augustus Simmers (6-4, 205, F, Anchorage Christian Schools/Malone Univ.), Spencer Svejcar (6-3, 195, G , Arvada, CO/Ralston Valley HS/Laramie County CC), Tayler Thompson (6-9, 220, F/C, Sonora, CA/Cuesta College), and Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs (6-4, 185, G, Seattle/O’Dea HS/Idaho), and true freshman Curtis Ryan (6-9, 6-9, 230, Warrnambool, Australia).
