UAA's Thompson voted 3rd Team Academic All-American

TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 25) – Alaska Anchorage senior Travis Thompson was recognized Wednesday as one of the elite performers in NCAA Division II men’s basketball in terms of both academic and on-court accomplishments, earning selection to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team.

The 6-1 guard from Anchorage’s Dimond High School was honored thanks to his 3.47 overall grade-point average as a civil engineering major, plus his outstanding play on the court for the Seawolves. This marks an unprecedented third straight year that a Seawolf has achieved the Capital One Academic All-America status, following Teancum Stafford in 2014 (2nd Team) and Liam Gibcus in 2013 (3rd Team).

“Travis’s accomplishment speaks well for his hard work and dedication on and off the court,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “He has shown a superior commitment to our program, while always prioritizing his studies. Having three Academic All-Americans in a row is one of my proudest moments in my time at UAA as it really symbolizes our goal of having quality, high-character student-athletes.”

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year leads the Seawolves (14-12, 10-6 GNAC) and ranks fourth in the league with 17.3 points per game, while his 3.2 three-pointers per game are No. 2 in the league and rank 19th nationally. Thompson has broken both the UAA and GNAC career records this season with 295 three-pointers, and he stands only 37 points shy of No. 2 on UAA’s career scoring list, with at least three games remaining.

The Capital One All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
